Chapter 1 - Whispers Through the Veil

The rain tapped softly against the tall, arched stained-glass windows of St. Jude’s vestry, casting long, bruised shadows across the stone floor. Clara stood motionless in her heavy white satin wedding dress, the square neckline framing her collarbones where a pulse fluttered erratically beneath pale skin. Her long brown wavy hair cascaded over her shoulders, pinned neatly beneath a delicate lace veil that smelled faintly of rain and expensive lavender. In her left hand, she clutched a tight bouquet of white and pink roses, their petals bruised from a nervous grip. In her right hand, she held a folded piece of cream-colored stationery, the edges worn from handling. The door behind her swung open with a dry groan, letting in a draft of cold air and the sharp click of heels.
Elena strode into the small room, her tailored emerald bridesmaid dress rustling sharply. Her face was flushed, her dark eyes narrowed with an intensity that bordered on fury. She stopped three feet away, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.
"You cannot actually be standing here holding that thing right now, Clara," Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating hiss. "People are waiting in the pews. The organist is literally playing the prelude for the third time because you locked yourself in this God-forsaken room."
Clara did not turn around immediately. She took a slow, deliberate breath, feeling the cool silk rise and fall against her chest. When she finally shifted her gaze, her eyes were completely dry, fixed on her lifelong friend with a terrifying stillness.
"Let them wait, Elena," Clara replied, her voice remarkably even, though a subtle tremor ran through her jaw. "Thirty minutes ago, this letter was sitting on my vanity. And unless you want me to walk down that aisle and commit perjury in front of two hundred guests, you are going to tell me how it got there."
Elena scoffed, stepping closer, her expression hardening further into absolute defiance. "It’s a prank, Clara! Or some neurotic cold feet manifestation! We have talked about this for ten years. Mark is out there fixing his tie, waiting to give you the life we planned out in college. You are throwing away an empire over a piece of paper?"
"An empire built on a lie," Clara shot back, her tone sharp as broken glass, the restraint finally cracking in her voice. "He didn't write his vows, Elena. Someone else wrote them for him. And this letter proves he knew about the embezzlement before we even bought the venue."

Elena stared at her, the color instantly draining from her cheeks, leaving her mouth slightly parted in a silent, guilty gasp.
