Chapter 5 - The Passenger in the Back

The black town car’s engine hummed with a low, menacing purr as it crept forward, cutting off Clara’s escape route down the open sidewalk. The tinted rear window lowered with a soft mechanical whir, revealing a familiar silver-haired man sitting comfortably in the leather-lined interior, holding a lit cigar. It was Julian Vance—Mark’s primary financial backer and the silent partner in the hostile takeover of her father’s company.
Clara froze, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath, the rain plastering her ruined dress against her shivering frame.
"Running away from your own wedding, Clara? That’s terribly bad form," Julian said, his voice smooth and gravelly, carrying an oily amusement that made her blood run colder than the rain. "Mark is going to be terribly upset. Get in the car."
"Go to hell," Clara panted, pressing her back against the damp brick wall of a closed bakery behind her, her fingers tightly clutching the wet letter in her pocket.
Julian exhaled a thick ring of blue smoke into the damp air, shaking his head slowly. "You really think you can outrun this, don't you? Mark is a fool, but he’s thorough. Every exit from this block is blocked by our security team. You have two options: get in this car voluntarily, or let my men drag you back down that aisle in front of all your high-society friends."
Clara looked back over her shoulder. The alley was empty for the moment, but she could hear Mark shouting far in the distance, his voice carrying over the sound of the storm. She was trapped between two monsters.
Before Julian could gesture to the burly driver in the front seat, a battered red pickup truck screeched around the corner, its tires throwing a massive wave of muddy water across the sidewalk, soaking the side of the town car. The passenger door swung open violently, and a rough-looking woman in a faded canvas work jacket leaned out, grabbing Clara by the wrist with a grip like a vice.
"Grab my hand if you want to keep breathing!" the woman shouted over the roar of the engine.

Without a second thought, Clara dove headfirst into the cab of the truck, slamming the door shut just as Julian’s driver lunged forward and struck the metal body of the vehicle with a loud, hollow thud.
