Chapter 14 - The Final Gambit

The rain had finally stopped by the time the tugboat docked at a secluded private marina on the northern edge of the city. The grey dawn was just beginning to bleed over the horizon, painting the skyline in cold, metallic hues of blue and silver. Clara stood on the wooden pier, wearing a dry oversized flannel shirt and work pants lent by Jax, her hair tied back in a messy braid. In her hand, she held the vintage laptop, its drive now fully decrypted and connected to a secure satellite uplink provided by Miller’s old federal contacts.

"Everything is set," Miller said, walking up beside her with a satellite phone in his hand. "The strike force commander has the secure transmission link. As soon as we hit upload on the master server mirror, federal marshals will simultaneous raid Julian Vance’s corporate headquarters and Mark’s penthouse suite."

Clara took a slow, deep breath, feeling the cool morning air fill her lungs. "And Mark?"

"Mark is currently holding a press conference at the cathedral, playing the heartbroken, abandoned groom to control the media narrative before you can speak to a reporter," Miller said grimly, handing her the satellite phone. "The live broadcast is streaming nationally right now."

Clara pressed a button on the phone, bringing up a live news feed on the screen. There was Mark, standing on the grand stone steps of St. Jude’s parish, wearing his black tuxedo with a somber, deeply distressed expression on his face. Microphones were thrust into his face as reporters shouted questions about his missing bride.

“Clara, if you are watching this, please come home,” Mark said into the cameras, his voice cracking with rehearsed emotion, a single, perfect tear glistening in the corner of his eye. “Whatever pressures or fears you are feeling, we can work through them together. I only love you.”

Clara watched the screen with absolute stillness, feeling neither anger nor sadness—only a profound, liberating clarity. She looked at Miller and Jax, who nodded in unison.

"Let's give him his headline," Clara said.

She tapped the screen, initiating the global data upload that would instantly transmit the entire master ledger, the forged asset transfers, and the money-laundering logs directly to every major news network, the federal prosecutor's office, and the live broadcast feed currently broadcasting Mark’s press conference.

For three seconds, nothing happened. Then, the live feed on Mark’s podium stuttered, froze, and abruptly cut to a bold, uneditable graphic displaying the federal indictment documents in full high-definition color.
