Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Ally

The red pickup truck surged forward, its oversized tires kicking up gravel as it fishtailed around the corner, leaving the black town car and Julian Vance shrouded in a cloud of exhaust and spray. Clara slumped against the cracked vinyl passenger seat, her chest heaving as water dripped steadily from the edges of her ruined veil onto her lap. The heater in the truck blasted a dull, metallic warmth that smelled faintly of stale coffee and gasoline.

The driver kept her eyes fixed on the slick, rain-swept road, her knuckles white on the steering wheel. She was in her late thirties, with sharp, weathered features, a jagged scar along her jawline, and short-cropped dark hair tucked beneath a faded baseball cap.

"You've got terrible taste in friends, bride-to-be," the woman said gruffly without looking over. "And even worse taste in groom."

Clara slowly lifted her head, wringing out a handful of white satin skirt that was now stained permanently gray at the hem. "Who are you? How did you know I would be in that alley?"

"Name's Jax," the woman replied, tapping the turn signal as she navigated a maze of industrial backstreets to avoid the main avenues where Mark’s security network operated. "And I didn't know you'd be in that alley. I was parked behind the bakery waiting to deliver a package of forged shipping manifests to one of Mark’s shell companies. Saw a woman in a wedding dress running for her life. Figured it was either a reality TV stunt or someone in deep trouble. My money was on the latter."

Clara pulled the wet, crumpled letter from her pocket, smoothing it out against her knee as best she could. The ink was slightly smeared, but the damning words remained perfectly legible.

"He’s stealing everything," Clara said, her voice hollow, the adrenaline finally wearing off to reveal a deep, bone-aching exhaustion. "Not just my father’s company. My mother’s estate, my trust, everything. He had Elena help him draft the legal documents while I was distracted with the wedding planning."

Jax glanced sideways at the paper for a fraction of a second before focusing back on the road. "That letter isn't just an internal memo, kid. That’s a signature ledger from the Cayman accounts. If you take that to the federal prosecutor downtown instead of the wedding altar, Mark and Julian won't just lose their corporate seats—they’ll be facing federal prison time."

Clara stared at Jax, a glimmer of hope cutting through the despair. "You know about Julian Vance?"

"Everyone in the shipping district knows Julian," Jax said grimly, shifting gears as the truck rumbled over a metal bridge. "He doesn't just do corporate takeovers. He launders money for international cartels using your father’s logistics network. Mark was just his golden boy puppet."

Before Clara could process the terrifying scale of what she had stumbled into, the radio on the dashboard crackled to life with a burst of static, broadcasting a police scanner frequency that made her blood run cold.
