Chapter 9

Descending the private elevator, Elena felt the dull ache in her ribs flare up with every shift in motion. She pressed a hand gently against her side, feeling the steady rhythm of her breathing. The physical damage from the alleyway attack was significant, but her mind remained razor-sharp. She checked her reflection in the mirrored wall of the car, adjusting the torn collar of her dark tank top. She looked like a survivor, not a victim.

When the doors opened back onto the mezzanine level overlooking the grand lobby, the noise hit her instantly. The party had completely unraveled.

News alerts had begun pinging on a hundred different smartphones simultaneously. Guests were crowded around the edges of the marble floor, staring down at their screens with expressions of absolute disbelief. The music had stopped, replaced by the low, anxious murmur of high-society panic. Several prominent investors were already shouting into their phones, demanding to know why their corporate accounts had just been restricted by federal oversight directives.

Standing near the base of the grand staircase, a cluster of reporters with microphones and camera crews had pushed their way past the confused bodyguards, frantically recording the chaos. They had received Elena’s anonymous tip twenty minutes ago, complete with the public ledger of the Vane family’s embezzlement scheme.

Elena walked quietly down the remaining steps, keeping to the shadows near the marble pillars. No one paid attention to the bruised woman in torn clothes anymore; all eyes were fixed on the digital screens displaying the collapse of the Vane dynasty in real-time. The illusion of untouchable wealth had vanished, exposing the fragile, corrupt machinery underneath.

She reached the exit doors leading out to the quiet night air of the city. As she pushed the heavy glass door open, a cool breeze washed over her face, carrying the scent of rain and exhaust. She paused on the threshold, taking one last look back at the glittering chandeliers that had witnessed the fall of an empire, before stepping out into the night to finish what she had started.
