Chapter 4
The heavy silence in the lobby was shattered by the frantic sound of rapid footsteps slapping against the marble floor. A senior security guard in a sharp black suit rounded the corner from the executive elevators, intending to clear the disturbance. But as he drew closer to the center of the grand staircase, his eyes locked onto the golden medallion resting on the floor.
The guard stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes went wide with absolute shock and panic, the color instantly draining from his face until he looked nearly as pale as Victoria’s wedding dress. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out; he simply stared at the archaic crest of the rearing wolf, recognizing the unmistakable seal of the Consortium that held absolute jurisdiction over every financial institution in the hemisphere.
He knew what that coin meant. It meant that the security clearance codes for the entire building had just been overridden. It meant that the corporate accounts were frozen, the vaults locked, and the ownership transferred.
Victoria turned her head sharply toward the panicked guard, her voice rising in a desperate demand. “Remove her! What are you standing there for? Arrest her for trespassing!”

The guard did not move. He couldn’t. His knees trembled visibly beneath his black trousers as he looked from the golden medallion up to the battered face of the kneeling woman. He had seen the Consortium’s enforcers before, usually on encrypted intelligence briefings overseas, but never walking through the front lobby of a luxury hotel in the middle of a wedding reception.
The surrounding guests began to murmur anxiously, sensing the absolute terror radiating from a man whose entire job description was to protect them from external threats. They realized the threat wasn't coming from outside the hotel; it was sitting right here on the floor, bleeding from the lip, holding the keys to their entire world. The illusion of safety was completely gone, replaced by the crushing weight of systemic accountability.
