Chapter 5

Realizing that no one was going to come to her rescue, Victoria stepped forward, her diamond necklace clicking against her collarbone as her voice turned shrill. “This is a private event! You have no right to be here, whatever games you’re playing!”
Elena ignored her entirely. With slow, deliberate grace, she placed her bruised palms flat against the cool marble floor and began to push herself upward. Every movement was calculated, refusing to show weakness despite the stiffness in her bruised joints and the ache in her ribs. The guests watched in spellbound silence as the battered woman rose to her full height, towering over the surrounding security detail simply through the sheer gravity of her presence.
Once standing, Elena reached into the deep pocket of her torn jeans and withdrew a second golden medallion, identical to the first. She caught it smoothly in her palm, letting the heavy metal settle against her skin.
She turned her gaze fully toward Victoria, her expression as cold and impassioned as a glacier. The difference between them was staggering: Victoria stood wrapped in white satin and diamonds, drowning in borrowed luxury, while Elena stood in torn clothes and bruises, owning every single brick beneath their feet.

“Miss Vane?” Elena said softly, her voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous lobby.
The question hung in the air like a blade poised above a throat. Victoria shrank back instinctively, her hands flying up to clutch her diamond necklace as if fearing someone might rip it away from her throat as well. The bodyguards lowered their hands, their professional instincts overriding their employer's frantic orders because they understood the hierarchy of power in the room had fundamentally shifted. Elena stepped forward, her worn boot heel clicking softly against the marble, marking the true beginning of the reckoning that the Vane family had spent decades trying to avoid.
