Chapter 10

The rain had begun to fall in a steady, cleansing drizzle by the time Elena reached her unmarked sedan parked two blocks away from the Grand Aurelia. She unlocked the door, slipped inside, and locked it securely behind her. The interior was dark, smelling faintly of leather and black coffee. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the two heavy golden medallions, and laid them carefully on the center console.

Her encrypted laptop was resting on the passenger seat. She flipped the lid open, and the screen illuminated her battered face with a sharp blue glow. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, executing a series of automated protocols that transferred the final assets of the Vane corporation into a dedicated restitution fund for the defrauded union workers.

Within minutes, the digital signatures were locked, verified, and unalterable. The legal battle was effectively over; the financial architecture had been dismantled from the top down, leaving Arthur and Victoria Vane with nothing but their expensive clothes and mounting criminal indictments.

Elena leaned back against the driver’s seat, closing her eyes for a long moment as the adrenaline finally began to fade from her bloodstream, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. The attack in the alley that morning had been meant to stop her from reaching the hotel, to protect the Vane family’s fraudulent wedding day at all costs. But the men who ambushed her had underestimated her resolve, just as Arthur Vane had underestimated the reach of the Consortium.

She opened her eyes and looked at her reflection in the rearview mirror. The bruise on her cheek was already turning a deep, ugly shade of violet, and her lip was swollen. Yet, looking closely into her own eyes, she saw the steady, unbreakable spirit that had kept her alive through years of corporate warfare and dangerous field audits. She had delivered justice, cold and absolute, to a world that believed money could buy immunity from consequence.
