Chapter 2

The silence in the grand lobby grew heavy, pressing against the crystal chandeliers and the expensive silk drapes. Victoria Vane shifted her weight, her immaculate white satin dress whispering against the marble. She expected tears, begging, or a pathetic scramble for the exit. Instead, the bruised woman kneeling before her simply tilted her head, a ghost of a wry smile touching her split lip.
Elena looked up with a completely defiant expression, her eyes clear and unwavering despite the dark bruise swelling across her cheek and the crimson trace at the corner of her mouth. When she spoke, her voice lacked any tremor of fear. It was calm, measured, and carried an unexpected authority that made the surrounding bodyguards tighten their grips on their lapels.
“You might want to check the deed on this building,” Elena said calmly.
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered elite. Several socialites dropped their champagne flutes, the crystal shattering against the marble with sharp, sudden echoes. Victoria’s face drained of color for a microsecond before hardening into a mask of pure indignation.
“You’re delusional,” Victoria snapped, though her voice lacked its previous absolute certainty. “This hotel has belonged to the Vane family for three generations. My father signed it over to me this very morning as a wedding gift.”

“Your father signed papers, yes,” Elena replied smoothly, shifting slightly to ease the ache in her ribs. “He also borrowed forty million dollars from my private restructuring firm to keep this sinking ship afloat last month. When he defaulted on Tuesday, the collateral clause transferred absolute ownership of the land, the structure, and every crystal bead on those chandeliers directly to my holding company.”
The bodyguards exchanged nervous glances. Victoria took a half-step backward, her diamond necklace flashing under the chandelier light as her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths. She refused to believe it. This battered vagrant in torn clothes could not possibly be the primary creditor holding the Vane empire in the palm of her hand. Yet, the absolute calm in Elena’s posture told a different story—a story written in high finance, cold logic, and total ruin.
