Chapter 11

By dawn, the news trucks had parked three deep along the avenue outside the Grand Aurelia Hotel. Headlines blared across every major news network and financial website: Vane Empire Collapses Amid Union Embezzlement Scandal; Billionaire’s Wedding Derrailed by Mysterious Auditor.
Inside the penthouse suite, Arthur and Victoria Vane sat in stunned silence as federal marshals waited quietly by the door with arrest warrants. The crystal chandeliers downstairs had been turned off for the first time in thirty years, plunging the grand lobby into a cold, shadow-filled gloom. The guests had long since fled, leaving behind a scattering of abandoned champagne glasses, expensive designer shoes, and torn floral arrangements that looked like the wreckage of a forgotten war.
Elena sat in a quiet diner four miles away, nursing a steaming mug of black coffee. The warm ceramic felt good against her cold fingers. She wore a simple black leather jacket over her dark tank top, having discarded the torn jeans for a pair of clean trousers. On the table beside her coffee cup lay her encrypted tablet and the two golden medallions, resting quietly against the worn laminate surface.
The morning paper lay open beside her plate, featuring a blurry photograph of Victoria fleeing the hotel in her ruined white satin dress, shielding her face from the flashing camera bulbs with a diamond-encrusted handbag. Elena didn't feel joy or triumph; she felt the quiet, stabilizing satisfaction of balance restored. In the world of high finance, power was often measured by how much one could take from others. But true authority, Elena knew, belonged to those who enforced the rules when everyone else looked away.
The waitress walked over with a fresh pot of coffee, pausing to look at the bruises on Elena’s face with a sympathetic, unspoken understanding.
“Rough night?” the waitress asked gently.
May you like
Elena looked up, offering a faint, tired smile that reached her eyes.
“Longer than you think,” Elena replied softly. “But the paperwork is finally finished.”
