Chapter 9 - The Uninvited Board

The black sedans parked in a rigid, synchronized formation along the circular gravel driveway outside the master parlor. Through the floor-to-ceiling bay windows, Julian watched as heavy doors swung open, disgorging four men in bespoke charcoal suits. They moved with the synchronized precision of predators closing in on a wounded animal. These were not police officers; these were the senior voting members of the Vance Corporation board of directors, led by Arthur Sterling, the elderly, silver-haired vice-chairman who had supposedly been recovering from hip surgery at his mountain chalet.

Julian released his grip on Marcus, letting the disgraced security guard slump to the floor coughing and gasping for breath. Julian snatched up the portable data drive from the tiles, sliding it securely into his pocket alongside the other evidence. He straightened the lapels of his black suit, his expression returning to absolute, chilling calm. If they wanted a corporate coup in the middle of the night, he would give them a war.

He walked out of the control room and strode down the grand hallway toward the front foyer, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the marble. Little Lily and Clara were nowhere in sight, safely hidden away in the reinforced panic room on the upper floor as Julian had previously instructed.

The heavy front doors unlocked from the outside with a mechanical click, pushed open by Arthur Sterling himself. The elderly man stepped into the mansion, leaning heavily on an ebony cane with a silver wolf-head handle. Despite his advanced age and supposed medical leave, his eyes were sharp, calculating, and devoid of any warmth.

“Good evening, Julian,” Arthur said smoothly, stepping past the shattered glass pitcher that still littered the floor from Bianca’s earlier outburst. “We received an automated security alert regarding a major fire hazard in the east wing. We felt it our fiduciary duty to come and assist our beloved CEO.”

Julian stood at the base of the grand staircase, towering over the older man. He did not invite them in, nor did he offer a handshake.

“You skipped the board meeting scheduled for next Tuesday, Arthur,” Julian replied, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “Yet you manage a midnight commute through a mountain fog. Impressive recovery for a man confined to a wheelchair.”

Arthur smiled, a thin, paper-dry expression that didn't reach his eyes. “Desperate times require miraculous recoveries, my boy. Especially when a rogue CEO starts tearing apart the foundation of everything we spent decades building.”

Arthur motioned to the three corporate lawyers flanking him behind the doorway. Each of them carried a thick leather briefcase stamped with the seal of the state’s highest corporate arbitration firm.

“We are here to invoke Clause 9 of the corporate charter,” Arthur announced, raising his voice so it resonated through the empty hall. “Immediate suspension of your executive powers due to emotional instability and reckless endangerment of corporate assets.”
