Chapter 11 - The Federal Sweep

The sharp glare of federal raid lights flooded through the open front doors, casting long, stark shadows across the marble floor and reflecting blindingly off the fragments of Bianca’s shattered glass pitcher. The lead federal agent, a broad-shouldered woman with silver-streaked hair tied back in a strict bun, stepped into the foyer wearing a tactical vest emblazoned with bold federal insignia. She held a heavy tablet in one hand, her eyes immediately locking onto Arthur Sterling and his three corporate lawyers.
“Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for federal securities fraud, corporate extortion, and obstruction of justice,” the federal agent announced, her voice ringing with absolute authority through the cavernous hall.
Arthur staggered backward, his silver-handled cane clattering loudly against the marble floor as two armed agents moved in swiftly, securing heavy steel cuffs around his frail wrists. The three corporate lawyers dropped their leather briefcases instantly, raising their hands in silent surrender as federal units fanned out to secure the perimeter of the estate.
Julian stood motionless, the obsidian key still clutched firmly in his right hand. He watched the man who had tried to steal his legacy being hauled out toward the waiting transport vans without offering a single word of gloating.
The lead federal agent walked up to Julian, nodding respectfully. “Mr. Vance. We received the data package you uploaded from the security terminal three minutes before our arrival. It contained the complete financial audit and the offshore routing numbers we needed to bypass their encryption.”
“My home has been compromised tonight, Agent Vance—no relation, I presume,” Julian said calmly, his dark beard framing a completely unreadable expression. “I want a full sweep of every room, every server rack, and every subterranean tunnel beneath this estate.”
“Already in motion, sir,” the agent replied, turning away to coordinate her teams.
Julian turned his back on the commotion and walked slowly toward the eastern corridor, leaving the federal officers to clear the foyer. His mind was entirely focused on the obsidian key in his palm. Arthur had mentioned that the floor safe beneath the staircase held secrets that would destroy his family name. But Julian had lived through enough deceit tonight to know that silence and buried truth were far more dangerous than any revelation.
He reached the base of the grand staircase where a hidden panel in the oak wainscoting blended seamlessly into the wall. Kneeling down on one knee, ignoring the dust and the lingering scent of smoke, Julian inserted the heavy obsidian key into the vertical brass keyhole. With a deep, mechanical groan that sounded like a sigh of relief from the house itself, the hidden panel swung inward, revealing a dark, stone-lined alcove illuminated by a single, flickering emergency light.

Inside the alcove rested a single, iron-bound wooden box, and resting neatly on top of it was a small, pink ribbon belonging to Lily.
