Chapter 14 - The Final Bullet In The Fog

The figure standing in the doorway was silhouetted against the blinding headlights of a deserted police cruiser left idling at the edge of the drive. As the heavy fog rolled in, the face became terrifyingly clear. It was Marcus, the head of security, his tactical vest discarded, leaving him in a simple black shirt. Blood stained his shoulder from where Julian had slammed him against the server rack earlier, but his grip on the silver revolver was rock-steady.

“End of the line, Julian,” Marcus sneered, his voice cutting through the cavernous silence of the foyer with lethal precision. “You should have stayed in your corporate offices and let the board handle the ledger. You just had to dig into the basement, didn’t you?”

Julian didn't flinch. He didn’t reach for any weapon. He simply stood tall at the base of the grand staircase, shielding Clara and little Lily above him with his massive frame. His sharp facial features were carved from absolute stone, his dark beard hiding any flicker of human fear.

“You think killing me will bury the truth, Marcus?” Julian asked, his voice dripping with an ice-cold contempt that made the gunman hesitate for a fraction of a second. “The federal agents are already combing through every server and every offshore account connected to Arthur and Bianca. Your name is already on the manifest.”

“The federal agents are currently dealing with a synchronized diversion on the western perimeter road,” Marcus laughed, a harsh, desperate sound. “By the time they realize this cruiser is the only thing left operational, you, your little niece, and your maid will be nothing more than a tragic footnote in a family gas leak.”

Up on the landing, little Lily stirred, letting out a soft whimper at the sound of the harsh voice below. She buried her face into Clara’s shoulder, too terrified to look down. Clara froze, closing her eyes in silent prayer as the barrel of Marcus’s revolver aligned directly with Julian’s chest.

Julian took one deliberate step forward, refusing to give the gunman the satisfaction of cowering. Every muscle in his body coiled like a steel spring, waiting for the precise micro-second to close the distance.

“You forgot one thing, Marcus,” Julian whispered softly, his eyes locked onto the gunman’s trembling trigger finger.

“And what’s that?” Marcus snarled, tightening his finger around the cold metal trigger.

“This house was built by men who knew how to trap wolves,” Julian said.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, the massive gold mirror mounted on the hallway wall suddenly swung inward with a deafening crash from behind the gunman. A pair of heavy, booted feet kicked Marcus squarely in the spine, sending the security guard sprawling face-first onto the shattered glass pitcher fragments littering the marble floor.

The silver revolver flew from his hand, skidding across the polished floorboards and stopping inches from Julian’s leather shoe. Standing in the hidden cavity behind the mirror was the lead federal agent, her tactical rifle lowered and smoking faintly.
