Chapter 6 - The Locked Mahogany Study

The heavy oak door of the study remained tightly bolted from the outside, plunging Julian into sudden, oppressive darkness. The amber moonlight struggled to pierce through the heavy velvet drapes, casting long, distorted shadows across the towering bookshelves. Julian gripped the edge of the mahogany desk with both hands, his knuckles turning white under the strain. The flash drive in his palm felt as heavy as lead. His father’s death, officially ruled a tragic accident on a winding mountain road ten years ago, was suddenly being dragged into the harsh light of a criminal extortion plot.

“Who is out there?” Julian demanded, his voice low and vibrating with restrained fury as it echoed against the wood-paneled walls.

There was no immediate answer from the hallway. Instead, the faint scratch of a match striking stone drifted through the ventilation grate near the floor. A sharp, chemical smell began to fill the room, sweet and pungent like burning wax and old parchment. Julian sprinted toward the door, throwing his shoulder against the heavy wood. The reinforced oak frame held firm, refusing to yield to his immense physical strength. The lock mechanism had been jammed from the outside with an iron wedge.

Through the narrow crack beneath the door, a thin wisp of gray smoke began to curl into the study. The panic that Julian had so carefully suppressed all evening finally threatened to break his iron composure. He looked back at the desk, his mind racing through the security protocols of the estate. The study had no windows that could be opened without a specialized hydraulic crank, and the key to the crank was kept in a wall safe that required a biometric scan.

“Mr. Julian!” a muffled voice cried from the other side of the door, accompanied by frantic pounding.

It was Clara. Despite her bruised arm and the terrifying ordeal she had just endured, the young maid had apparently managed to slip away from her mother and Lily to investigate the commotion in the east wing.

“Clara, listen to me carefully,” Julian shouted, pressing his mouth close to the gap at the bottom of the door. “Find the heavy brass poker by the fireplace in the main hall. Use it to pry the iron wedge out of the door frame. Hurry, before the smoke gets any denser.”

Footsteps scrambled frantically across the marble floor outside. Julian turned back to the desk, coughing as the smoke began to sting his eyes. He picked up the flash drive and the mysterious note, stuffing them securely into his inner suit pocket. If Bianca thought she could bury him with forged secrets from a prison cell, she was sorely mistaken. But the burning question remained: who inside his own household had locked the door and set the fire?
