Chapter 8 - A Breach Within The Guard

The fluorescent lights of the security control room flickered ominously, casting harsh shadows across the dismantled server racks. Marcus kept his hand resting lazily on the leather strap of his holster, his eyes locked onto Julian with an unsettling confidence. The burning smell from the east wing had faded into a distant acrid haze, replaced by the sharp ozone smell of overloaded electrical circuits.

“You’re making a grave error, Mr. Vance,” Marcus said, his voice disturbingly calm for a man caught red-handed destroying company property. “You think Bianca was the mastermind? She was merely a convenient distraction while the real restructuring of your assets took place.”

Julian didn't blink. His massive frame blocked the only exit from the small control room, his fists clenched at his sides. The dark beard and sharp features that usually inspired respect among his peers now hardened into the visage of an apex predator cornered in his own den.

“Take your hand off your weapon, Marcus, and put the portable drive on the console,” Julian instructed, his tone chillingly low. “We can discuss your termination and your prison sentence like civilized men.”

Marcus let out a short, mocking laugh. “Prison? Mr. Vance, your entire corporate empire is built on signatures that were forged by your late father and approved by your board of directors twenty years ago. If I go down, the SEC gets the unencrypted files within the hour. Your entire legacy vanishes before the sun rises.”

Julian took a measured step forward. He remembered the flash drive tucked safely inside his inner suit pocket—the one containing the file about his father’s supposed accident. Every piece of the puzzle was sliding into a terrifyingly coherent picture. Bianca, Marcus, and likely half the board members had been draining his family's wealth while keeping him blinded by corporate mergers and social obligations.

“My father built this company with his bare hands,” Julian growled, closing the distance between them with surprising speed.

Before Marcus could draw his sidearm, Julian lunged forward, slamming the security guard against the metal server rack with bone-rattling force. The portable data drive slipped from Marcus’s grasp, clattering across the tiled floor. Marcus grunted, gasping for air as Julian’s forearm pressed firmly against his windpipe, pinning him securely against the unyielding steel.

“Where are the physical ledgers?” Julian demanded, his face inches from Marcus’s sweat-slicked forehead.

Marcus managed a strained, defiant grin, blood trickling from the corner of his lip. “You... you’re too late, Julian. Look at the main monitor.”

Julian snapped his gaze toward the surviving auxiliary screen on the far wall. The live feed of the front gates showed a fleet of unmarked black sedans pulling up the long, winding driveway, their high beams cutting through the midnight fog.
