Chapter 13 - The Secret On The Landing

Clara’s face was deathly pale, her bright yellow cleaning gloves discarded somewhere in the darkness behind her. She clutched five-year-old Lily against her chest like a shield, the little girl’s dark hair messy and her white and pink dress stained with dust from the hallway. Lily looked down at Julian with wide, innocent eyes, completely unaware of the explosive secret that had just echoed from the small digital recorder lying beside the iron-bound box.
Julian stood up slowly, towering over the wooden chest at his feet. His dark eyes locked onto Clara, reading the absolute terror and guilt written plainly across the young maid’s features.
“You knew,” Julian stated, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register that carried effortlessly up the stairwell. It wasn't a question; it was an absolute execution of fact.
Clara flinched, stepping back until her shoulder hit the carved wooden banister. A tear slipped down her cheek, mirroring the droplet that had fallen earlier onto her cleaning gloves.
“I didn’t know until tonight, Mr. Julian, I swear on my mother’s life!” Clara cried out in a desperate whisper, careful not to wake or frighten the child sleeping half-against her shoulder. “When Bianca dragged me into the east wing earlier, she thought I was looking for the inheritance documents. But I found my mother’s old diary hidden inside the wall panel of the guest suite.”
Julian took a slow step toward the stairs, his leather shoes clicking against the marble. The fury that had driven him through the police raid and the confrontation with Arthur Sterling had completely evaporated, replaced by a profound, hollow stillness.
“And what did your mother’s diary say, Clara?” Julian asked, his tone unnervingly calm.
“It said that my mother wasn't just a maid working for your father,” Clara sobbed quietly, adjusting her grip on the little girl. “She was the wet nurse for the true heir—your brother’s real daughter. When the accident happened ten years ago, Bianca and Arthur orchestrated the whole thing to seize control of the estate. They stole my baby sister—Lily—and raised her under your roof as a captive pawn to keep you compliant.”
Julian stopped at the base of the staircase, looking up at the little girl he had sworn to protect with his life. Every memory of her running into his arms, every tear she had shed tonight, took on a completely different meaning. She was not a distant relative; she was his true niece, the last remaining blood of his family line, stolen and hidden in plain sight by the monsters he had trusted.
Before Julian could climb the stairs to take Lily into his arms, a sudden, sharp click echoed from the heavy front doors behind him.

The massive oak doors swung open wide once more, revealing a figure standing alone in the foggy night air, holding a silver revolver aimed directly at Julian’s chest.
