Chapter 6 - The Basement Descent

The laundry hoist squealed in agonizing protest as it plummeted down the brick-lined shaft, the rushing air whipping their hair around in the dark.

“Hold on!” Julian shouted over the deafening mechanical roar, wrapping his arms securely around Olivia and shielding Lucy with his own body.

With a violent shudder, the platform hit the rubber bumper at the bottom of the shaft, throwing up a thick cloud of dust and lint.

“Is everyone okay?” Julian asked immediately, coughing as he helped Olivia off the platform onto the cold concrete floor of the basement.

“I’m fine,” Lucy said, flashing her phone light around the cavernous, damp room filled with towering stacks of industrial washing machines.

Olivia leaned heavily against Julian’s shoulder, her breathing shallow and ragged as she looked around the unfamiliar subterranean labyrinth.

“Where… where do we go from here?” Olivia whispered, her strength clearly fading rapidly from the shock and the exertion of the escape.

“There’s an old steam tunnel that leads out to the parking lot near the treeline,” a familiar voice echoed from behind a row of giant dryers.

Julian instinctively reached into his pocket for a weapon, but relaxed as Marcus stepped out from the shadows holding a heavy iron wrench.

“Marcus! How did you get in here?” Julian asked, guiding Olivia toward a dry wooden bench near the boiler room.

“Found a service map in the security shack while you were upstairs,” Marcus explained, flashing his own light down a dark, brick-arched corridor. “And I locked the main security doors behind me, so we’ve got about ten minutes before they blast their way through.”

Lucy knelt beside her mother, opening a small bottle of water she had grabbed from the patient room and holding it to Olivia’s dry lips.

“Drink a little bit, Mom. We’re going to get you out of here, I promise,” Lucy murmured, wiping a stray tear from her mother’s cheek.

Julian stood guard at the entrance of the steam tunnel, his mind racing as he pieced together the fragments of the conspiracy that had destroyed their lives.

“Arthur Vance didn’t just steal my company stock,” Julian said, turning back to face Marcus in the dim light. “He used Olivia’s disappearance to force my father into signing over the controlling shares before he had that fatal stroke.”

Marcus nodded grimly, checking the magazine of a small pistol he had liberated from the unconscious guard upstairs.

“And Victoria was his inside operator from day one. She engineered your meeting at the charity gala ten years ago like a military operation,” Marcus added.

Olivia raised her head, her green eyes reflecting the flickering orange glow of the distant boiler flames with a fierce, burning clarity.

“They threatened to put Lucy in an adoption agency if I didn’t sign the false confession and walk into the sanitarium voluntarily,” Olivia said, her voice steady and chillingly cold.

Julian felt a cold fury rise in his chest, eclipsing the shock of the wedding day revelation and replacing it with a singular, driving purpose.

“They’re going to pay for every single day they stole from you, Olivia,” Julian vowed, stepping into the dark mouth of the steam tunnel.

They moved quickly through the brick conduit, the air growing warmer as they navigated the maze of insulated pipes toward freedom and justice.

Suddenly, a loud metallic clang echoed behind them from the basement, followed by the angry shouting of armed men filtering down through the laundry shaft.

“They’re already down here!” Marcus hissed, pushing Julian and the women ahead of him as he raised his weapon toward the tunnel entrance.

“Go! I’ll cover the rear!” Marcus ordered, firing a single warning shot down the corridor as the beam of an industrial flashlight bounced off the brick walls.

Julian grabbed Lucy’s hand, pulling her and Olivia through the final iron hatch that opened up directly into the dense forest behind the sanitarium.
