Chapter 2 - The Witness in the Pew

The harsh glare of the cathedral’s chandeliers seemed to focus entirely on Victoria as the chilling text message hung suspended in the heavy air.
“Explain this,” Julian commanded, his voice devoid of the warmth that had defined their three-year courtship.
Victoria’s hands flew to her mouth, her fabricated tears finally spilling over as she looked desperately toward her father in the front row.
“It’s a frame-up, Julian, you have to believe me, someone is trying to sabotage our life,” Victoria stammered, backing away from the altar step.
Lucy stepped closer, her dark jeans brushing against the mahogany pews as she maintained eye contact with the groom.
“My mother didn’t commit suicide, Julian. She’s been in a private memory care facility in upstate New York, heavily medicated and stripped of her identity,” Lucy stated, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins.
Julian looked down at the checks again, recognizing the handwriting instantly. It wasn’t just corporate theft; it was systematic identity erasure.
“How do you have these?” Julian asked, his voice softening slightly as he looked at the young girl standing before him.
“My mother had lucid moments,” Lucy replied, pulling a small silver flash drive from her pocket. “She hid these duplicates behind the baseboard in her room before Victoria’s men cut off her access.”
Before Julian could take the flash drive, a heavy hand descended upon his shoulder from behind. It was Arthur Vance, Victoria’s influential billionaire father, his face flushed with a dangerous mix of embarrassment and calculated menace.
“This wedding will proceed, Julian, or your family's shipping empire will be liquidated by sunrise,” Arthur murmured into Julian’s ear, his tone venomous and absolute.
Julian pulled away from his prospective father-in-law, his jaw tightening into a hard line of defiance.
“You threatened my family for the last time, Arthur,” Julian said, turning his back on the altar and walking toward the grand oak doors.
The congregation rose in a chaotic wave, cameras flashing from the rear pews as the ceremony dissolved into an unprecedented public spectacle. Victoria let out a sharp, choked cry, abandoning her bridal composure entirely as she lunged toward Julian’s retreating back.
“You can’t leave me here, Julian! I love you!” Victoria screamed, her voice cracking with manic desperation as she tripped over her own heavy white skirts.
Julian ignored her cries, meeting Lucy halfway down the central aisle where they stood shoulder-to-shoulder facing the grand exit.
“We need to leave, now,” Lucy whispered, her eyes darting toward the side transept where two men in identical dark suits had just unlatched the heavy emergency doors.
Julian nodded, gripping the manila envelope tightly in his right hand while instinctively shielding Lucy with his left.
“Who are those men?” Julian asked, noticing the way the two strangers maneuvered with tactical precision through the dispersing crowd.

“They aren’t guests,” Lucy said, her breath catching in her throat as one of the men reached inside his jacket. “They’re the ones who tried to break into mother’s room last night.”
