Chapter 12 - The Forensic Audit

The morning sun cast long, golden rays across the polished hardwood floors of the Vance-Sterling executive offices, illuminating stacks of financial records scattered across the conference table.
Julian sat at the center of the room, rubbing his temples as a team of federal forensic accountants continued sorting through the corrupted digital ledgers.
“The damage is worse than we thought, Julian,” Marcus said, placing a thick report down in front of him with a heavy sigh.
“How bad?” Julian asked, not looking up from the bank statements detailing the missing charitable trust funds.
“Vance didn’t just embezzle from your father’s estate; he leveraged the company’s primary shipping terminals as collateral for high-interest offshore loans,” Marcus explained grimly.
Olivia sat quietly by the window, sipping a cup of herbal tea while Lucy examined the antique globe resting in the corner of the private office.
“Can we salvage the core shipping operations, or will we have to file for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy protection?” Olivia asked, her voice carrying the sharp business acumen she had possessed before her incarceration.
Marcus checked his tablet before answering. “If we liquidate the subsidiary real estate holdings and freeze the remaining corporate assets tied to Arthur’s offshore accounts, we can avoid bankruptcy.”
Julian stood up, walking over to join Olivia by the window as they looked out over the bustling harbor where their family’s cargo ships were docked.
“We do it. Sell every last property Victoria and her father acquired with stolen money, down to their summer estate in the Hamptons,” Julian ordered firmly.
“Already initiated the court freeze on those properties an hour ago,” Marcus replied, offering a rare, approving smile.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the office burst open without warning, revealing a breathless federal prosecutor holding an urgent priority envelope.
“Mr. Vance, you need to see this immediately,” the prosecutor said, handing the thick manila packet directly to Julian.
Julian opened the seal, pulling out a certified transcript of Arthur Vance’s initial interrogation down at the federal holding facility.
“What did he say? Did he give up his co-conspirators?” Olivia asked, stepping closer as she read the underlined text over Julian’s shoulder.
Julian’s face went pale as he read the name highlighted at the bottom of the deposition page—a name that none of them had expected to see.
“It’s not just Arthur and Victoria,” Julian whispered, his hands trembling as he stared at the signature of a trusted family member.
Lucy dropped the small bookmark she was holding, rushing over to join them with a look of mounting dread on her face.
“Who is it, Julian? Who else was involved in putting mother away?” Lucy demanded, her voice shaking as she looked at the grim expressions around the room.
Julian looked up slowly, meeting Olivia’s horrified gaze as he spoke the name aloud into the quiet office.
“It was my own uncle, Richard. He signed off on the initial institutionalization orders in exchange for half of the shipping empire.”
The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence as the realization hit them that the betrayal ran even deeper than their worst nightmares had imagined.
“Richard is currently on the executive board of our primary competitor in London,” Marcus added, his voice dropping to a dangerous register.
Olivia closed her eyes for a brief moment, taking a deep, steadying breath before opening them with an expression of fierce, unyielding resolve.

“Then we don’t just take back our company, Julian. We take down their entire international syndicate,” Olivia said, her voice ringing with absolute power.
