Chapter 3 - The Alleyway Escape

The heavy mahogany doors of the cathedral burst open as Julian shoved Lucy behind a massive stone pillar just as a silenced gunshot pinged off the marble floor.

“Run!” Julian shouted, grabbing Lucy’s light blue hoodie and pulling her toward the narrow service exit used by the choir.

They burst out into the damp, gray afternoon air of downtown Boston, the distant sound of sirens wailing against the backdrop of towering glass skyscrapers.

“This way, my car is parked in the underground garage two blocks over,” Julian said, his tuxedo jacket discarded on a park bench during their frantic sprint.

Lucy kept pace, her long brown hair whipping across her face as they ducked down a narrow brick alleyway flanked by industrial dumpsters.

“We’re being followed,” Lucy warned, glancing back at the mouth of the alley where a sleek black sedan had just blocked off the exit.

Julian cursed under his breath, scanning the brick walls for a fire escape or a service door that might offer temporary shelter.

“Hold onto my hand and don’t let go, no matter what happens,” Julian instructed, his corporate composure entirely replaced by the primal instinct of survival.

They squeezed through a rusted chain-link gate leading into the back courtyard of an old printing press, the heavy machinery inside humming with muffled life.

“Julian! Over here!” a familiar voice hissed from the shadows near the loading dock.

Marcus, Julian’s loyal head of security and corporate counsel, emerged from behind a green recycling bin holding a set of heavy iron keys.

“Get in the back of the van, hurry,” Marcus urged, unlocking the rear doors of a nondescript delivery vehicle parked against the loading ramp.

Julian hoisted Lucy inside first, climbing in right behind her and slamming the heavy metal doors shut just as heavy footsteps echoed outside the courtyard gate.

“Are you alright, kiddo?” Marcus asked, glancing through the glass partition at Lucy, who was trembling violently now that the adrenaline was beginning to fade.

“I’m okay,” Lucy whispered, clutching the manila envelope to her chest like a shield. “We have to get to the clinic before they move my mother.”

Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as the delivery van’s engine roared to life and they peeled out onto the wet asphalt.

“Marcus, how deep does Vance’s reach go?” Julian asked, his voice dark and measured.

Marcus kept his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror, dodging a pair of unmarked black SUVs that had just pulled out of the cathedral parking lot.

“Deeper than you think, boss. They’ve been quietly buying up your company’s board seats for eighteen months using funds traced back to Olivia’s estate,” Marcus said grimly.

Julian closed his eyes, the horrifying realization hitting him that his entire professional and personal life had been engineered by the people he trusted most.

“My father’s will,” Julian murmured, opening his eyes with sudden clarity. “Olivia didn’t just vanish; she was framed for embezzling from my father’s trust the week before we met.”

Marcus nodded solemnly, pressing harder on the gas pedal as the van took a sharp turn toward the interstate heading north toward New York.

“And Victoria was the one who signed the intake papers at the sanitarium under an alias,” Marcus added, tossing a manila folder onto the back seat.

Julian picked up the folder, his hands trembling slightly as he opened it to reveal a forged death certificate dated ten years ago, signed by Victoria’s father.

“She orchestrated the whole thing to take control of the family trust,” Lucy said softly, staring out the window at the passing blur of highway signs.

Julian placed a comforting hand on Lucy’s shoulder, vowing silently that he would tear down Arthur Vance’s empire brick by brick to make things right.

“We’re going to get your mother back, Lucy. I promise you that,” Julian said, his voice carrying a quiet, unyielding authority.

The van sped into the twilight, leaving the glittering lights of Boston behind them, unaware that a GPS tracker was quietly blinking from beneath the chassis.
