Chapter 8: The Confrontation

Three days later, the glass boardroom of Vance Global Securities in downtown Manhattan was filled with an aura of impending doom.
Evelyn Miller sat at the end of the long mahogany conference table, flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys. Her posture was rigid, her expression ice-cold, though the slight twitch in her left eyelid betrayed her mounting anxiety.
The double doors swung open, and Clara Vance walked in, accompanied by her father and Marcus Sterling, the city’s most feared litigator in estate law.
“Let’s make this quick, Clara,” Evelyn said smoothly, adjusting her diamond brooch. “I understand you're harboring my grandchildren. As their biological grandmother and the primary executor of the Miller estate, I am formally demanding their immediate return. We have already filed for emergency custody in family court.”
Clara didn't sit down. She tossed a thick black binder onto the center of the table with a resounding thud.
“You might want to withdraw that petition, Evelyn,” Clara said calmly.
Evelyn’s lead attorney smirked. “On what grounds? Miss Vance, you have no legal standing here. You aren't married to James, and the mother is medically unfit—”
“Open tab four,” Marcus Sterling interrupted, leaning forward.
Evelyn’s attorney flipped the page. His confident smirk instantly dissolved into an ash-gray pallor. He leaned over, whispering frantically into Evelyn’s ear.
“What is this?” Evelyn hissed, pulling the binder toward her.
“Those are the audio recordings from your private investigator’s phone,” Clara stated, her eyes locking onto Evelyn’s with predatory focus. “The ones where you explicitly ordered him to slash Sarah’s tires, bribe her landlords to evict her, and forge tax documents to frame her for offshore money laundering. The New York District Attorney and the FBI financial crimes division received copies twenty minutes ago.”
Evelyn’s hands began to shake violently. “This is fabricated! James would never allow this!”
“James is currently sitting in the DA’s office giving a full sworn deposition against you,” Clara revealed, watching the last remnants of Evelyn’s aristocratic empire crumble in real time. “He handed over your private ledger from the family safe. Turns out, cowardice has a breaking point when faced with twenty years in federal prison for conspiracy.”

Evelyn slumped back into her leather chair, her face completely drained of color. For thirty years, she had ruled her family with manipulation, money, and fear. In less than a week, a dying mother’s courage and a betrayed bride’s resolve had dismantled it all.
