Chapter 10: Words Before the Sunset

The guest room was bathed in the soft, warm light of bedside lamps. The faint hum of an oxygen concentrator provided a steady rhythm to the quiet room. Sarah lay resting, her breathing shallow, but her eyes opened when she heard the soft click of the door.

When she saw James step inside, her expression didn't harden. The anger had burned away days ago, leaving only a profound, transcendent peace.

James fell to his knees beside the bed, burying his face in the edge of the mattress as deep, shuddering sobs wracked his body.

“I’m sorry... I am so sorry, Sarah,” he wept, his voice muffled by the blankets. “I ruined everything. You bore the entire weight alone while I lived in luxury. I don't deserve your forgiveness. I don't deserve anything.”

Sarah weakly lifted her arm, her frail fingers resting gently on James’s dark hair. It was a gesture of mercy that shattered whatever remaining pride he possessed.

“I forgave you a long time ago, James,” Sarah whispered softly. “Hating you was like drinking poison and expecting you to die. I didn't have the energy to hate you and love our babies at the same time. So I chose to love them.”

James lifted his tear-stained face, looking at the woman he had abandoned. “What can I do? Tell me what to do for them.”

“Don’t let your mother near them,” Sarah said, her voice firming with the last reserves of maternal strength. “And don't force yourself into their lives until they are ready. Earn their trust with actions, not checks. Let Clara guide them.”

“Clara?” James blinked, surprised.

“Clara has the strength you lacked,” Sarah murmured, glancing toward the doorway where Clara stood quietly. “She stood up to your mother in front of the whole world to protect two children who weren't even hers. She will be the mother they need when I am gone.”

James turned to look at Clara, a profound sense of awe and humility washing over him. He took Sarah’s hand and pressed it to his forehead.

“I swear to you, Sarah,” James vowed in a trembling voice. “I will spend every day of the rest of my life making sure they are safe, loved, and free.”

A soft, contented smile touched Sarah’s lips as she closed her eyes, resting in the quiet assurance that her mission on earth was finally complete.
