Chapter 7: Unraveling the Web

The morning sun broke through the autumn mist, casting a warm amber glow over the Vance estate. In the upstairs study, Clara sat across from Sarah, who was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, a warm cup of herbal tea resting between her trembling fingers.
On the desk between them lay a mountain of legal documents, bank statements, and old letters that Thomas’s investigators had retrieved overnight.
“I never wanted revenge, Clara,” Sarah said softly, gazing out the French windows at the garden where Lily and Leo were playing under the watchful eye of a nanny. “When James left, I thought I could build a quiet life for them in Ohio. But Evelyn hired private investigators who followed us everywhere. Every time I got a stable job, my employer would receive an anonymous tip claiming I had a criminal record. She wanted to crush me until I gave up full custody.”
“Why would she want custody if she hated you so much?” Clara asked, her brow furrowed.
“Because of the Miller family patriarch's will,” Sarah revealed, a faint, bitter smile touching her lips. “James’s grandfather left a stipulations clause. Fifty percent of the primary estate is legally tied to James's firstborn biological heir. If James had no legitimate children, the entire fortune defaulted to Evelyn’s control. But if the children were alive and raised under the Miller roof, Evelyn could act as their legal conservator until they turned twenty-five.”
Clara felt a wave of nausea wash over her. “So Evelyn drove you away to keep you from claiming their rights, but wanted the children so she could control the trust fund.”
“Exactly,” Sarah whispered. “When she found out James was marrying you—an heiress with real power and legal resources—she panicked. She knew that once you two were married, James would have the financial independence to look for his children again. She sent men to threaten me last month, telling me she would take the kids by force if I didn't sign termination of parental rights.”
Clara reached across the table and took Sarah’s cold, fragile hand in hers. “You brought them to the only place Evelyn couldn't touch them.”
“I brought them to you,” Sarah said, tears glistening in her tired eyes. “I know it was cruel to blow up your wedding, Clara. But I saw an interview of you last year, talking about the Vance Foundation's work for orphaned children. I knew... I just knew in my soul you were the only person who could protect them from that family.”
May you like
Clara squeezed her hand tightly. “You don't have to fight alone anymore, Sarah. I promise you, they will never lay a hand on Lily and Leo.”
