Chapter 5: The Safe Harbor

The Vance estate on the outskirts of Westchester was quiet, surrounded by towering pines and the gentle hush of falling leaves. It was a stark contrast to the chaotic battlefield of St. Jude’s.

Inside the spacious guest suite, Sarah lay propped up against a mountain of plush pillows. A private physician, a longtime friend of Thomas Vance, had just finished checking her vitals and administering an intravenous drip to stabilize her severe dehydration.

Downstairs in the kitchen, Clara had discarded her wedding gown, changing into a pair of soft linen trousers and an oversized cashmere sweater. She sat at the mahogany island, watching Lily and Leo devour bowls of warm chicken noodle soup.

“Are you an angel?” Leo asked between spoonfuls, his hazel eyes wide and earnest. “Mommy said angels wear white dresses.”

Clara offered a sad, gentle smile, reaching over to ruffle his messy brown hair. “No, buddy. Just a regular person who should have opened her eyes a lot sooner.”

“Mommy was scared you’d hate us,” Lily confessed quietly, setting her spoon down. “She thought you might be mean, like Grandma Evelyn.”

“I could never hate you,” Clara said softly. “None of this is your fault.”

Thomas walked into the kitchen, his phone pressed to his ear. He muttered a few stern instructions before ending the call and sliding onto the stool next to his daughter.

“Dr. Reynolds says she has advanced stage IV lymphoma,” Thomas said in a low voice so the children wouldn’t hear. “She’s fighting, but the medical neglect over the past year has taken a massive toll. She has weeks, maybe a couple of months at best.”

Clara felt a lump form in her throat. She looked at the two innocent faces across the table. They had lost their father to cowardice, and now they were about to lose their mother to mortality.

“What about the money James claimed he sent?” Clara asked.

“I had our forensic accountants dig into the Miller family trust an hour ago,” Thomas replied grimly. “Evelyn set up a dummy offshore account in Sarah’s name seven years ago. She funnelled two million dollars through it, but kept the routing credentials locked. James thought he was supporting his kids; in reality, Evelyn used that account to blackmail Sarah, threatening to frame her for international tax fraud if she ever set foot in New York.”

A cold chill ran down Clara’s spine. The Miller family wasn't just wealthy; they were a syndicate of emotional abuse and calculated malice.
