Chapter 2: Shattered Stained Glass

“The ceremony is over,” Clara announced into the microphone. Her voice didn't waver. It echoed off the vaulted ceiling like a hammer striking stone.
Gasps rippled through the pews. James’s wealthy business associates exchanged uneasy glances, while Clara’s father, Thomas Vance, immediately rose from his seat, marching toward the altar with a fury that could tear down walls.
“What is the meaning of this, Miller?” Thomas demanded, his voice booming over the chaos.
“Clara, wait! Let me explain!” James pleaded, reaching for her dress. “You don’t know what happened back then! I didn't have a choice!”
“You always had a choice,” Clara replied, pulling off her diamond engagement ring and letting it drop onto the red carpet. It rolled, glittering under the chandeliers, until it tapped against the toe of Lily’s scuffed shoe.
Evelyn rushed up the steps, her facade of aristocratic grace entirely crumbling. “You insolent girl! Do you have any idea how much this wedding cost? How dare you humiliate my family in front of society over the lies of an unhinged, destitute woman!”
Lily didn’t blink. She looked up at Evelyn with an eerie maturity far beyond her seven years. “Mommy isn’t destitute, Grandma. She’s sick. And she didn't want any money. She just wanted Daddy to see what he abandoned before she goes away.”
The word *sick* hung heavily in the air.
Clara looked at the two children. Their clothes, while clean and pressed for a wedding, were clearly second-hand. Their eyes carried a haunting combination of exhaustion and fierce loyalty. They hadn't come to start a riot; they had come on a sacred mission assigned by a dying mother.
“Where is your mother now, Lily?” Clara asked softly, kneeling once more to match the girl’s height.
“She’s waiting in a taxi parked at the corner of Oak Street,” Leo answered, clutching his sister’s hand tightly. “She said if Daddy called the police on us, we had to run straight back to the car.”
Clara stood up and turned to her father. “Dad, get my coat from the dressing room. And tell the caterers to pack the food and send it to the local shelter.”
“Clara, you can’t leave with them!” James shouted, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. “I love you! Everything I built here was for us!”

Clara turned her back on him without a word, took Lily and Leo by their hands, and walked down the aisle, leaving the groom standing alone at the altar he had built on a foundation of ghosts.
