Chapter 6 - Trapped Below

The heavy iron door slammed shut with a concussive boom that rattled the glass jars on the industrial shelving. The sudden plunge into absolute darkness was absolute, broken only by the frantic, erratic beam of Julian’s flashlight as he whipped it around the confined basement room. He rushed toward the door, throwing his shoulder against the cold metal, but it didn't budge. The deadbolt had been thrown from the outside with mechanical precision.
“Victoria!” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls with sharp urgency. “Open this door right now!”
There was no answer from the stairwell above, only the muffled sound of heavy footsteps retreating across the wooden floorboards of the master study, followed by the definitive click of the trapdoor being dragged back into place. He was sealed beneath the mansion, trapped in the very vault his father had warned him about.
Julian forced himself to take a deep, steadying breath, fighting down the panic clawing at his throat. He brought the flashlight up, sweeping the beam across the room in search of a secondary exit, an electrical panel, or a manual release lever for the heavy door.
The flickering blue light from the digital monitor on the steel desk continued its hypnotic pulse, casting long, distorted shadows across the rows of amber-filled glass jars. Julian walked over to the desk, his mind racing as he replayed his father’s recorded warning over and over again. Victoria will do anything to ensure the bloodline ends tonight.
He looked down at the digital monitor. The scrolling lines of genetic markers had stopped, replaced by a single flashing warning message: BREACH DETECTED IN SECTOR B.
Julian frowned, leaning closer to the screen. Sector B wasn't part of the basement storage; it was the original Victorian-era greenhouse attached to the back of the mansion—the exact place where the young maid had been working before Victoria dragged her into the hallway with the leather whip.
With a sudden surge of realization, Julian understood the cruel architecture of the trap. Victoria hadn't just locked him away to hide the family secrets; she had lured him down here to clear the board, leaving the defenseless maid completely exposed in the greenhouse above.
He scanned the metal utility table frantically, spotting a heavy iron crowbar resting beneath a stack of old ledgers. Grabbing it, he wedged the curved end into the frame of the iron door, planting his feet firmly against the stone floor, and threw all his weight into the leverage.

The ancient metal groaned in protest, the rusted hinges screaming as the door slowly gave way by a fraction of an inch, allowing a thin sliver of warm, flickering light to cut through the darkness.
