Chapter 3 - The Locked Study

The heavy oak door of the master study loomed at the end of the hallway, its brass handle polished to a mirror shine that distorted the warm light of the wall sconces. Julian strode toward it with a purposeful gait, the brass skeleton key gripped tightly in his right hand. Behind him, the sound of hurried footsteps signaled that Victoria was breaking her frozen stance and rushing to intercept him before he could cross the threshold.

“Stop right there, Julian! You have no idea what you’re unlocking!” Victoria’s voice lost its polished composure, cracking slightly with a desperate urgency that she tried desperately to conceal.

Julian didn’t even glance back. He inserted the skeleton key into the ornate keyhole, feeling the heavy internal tumblers click into place with a satisfying, mechanical thud. He turned the key, feeling the centuries-old lock give way with a low groan of stressed timber. The study was supposed to be a sanctuary of business and genealogy, a quiet room where he managed the remnants of his family’s vast estate. But over the past few months, it had transformed into a psychological battleground.

As Julian pushed the heavy door inward, a wave of cool, stagnant air spilled out into the hallway, carrying the distinct scent of old paper, leather-bound books, and a faint, metallic tang that didn’t belong.

Victoria lunged forward, her beige satin silk robe billowing behind her like the wings of a trapped bird, but Julian caught her wrist with a firm, inescapable grip. His fingers locked around her arm just inches from the doorframe, his dark wavy hair falling slightly across his brow as he glared down at her.

“Stay out,” Julian warned, his voice a low, vibrating growl that left no room for argument.

Inside the dimly lit study, the amber glow from the hallway illuminated a horrifying sight resting on the mahogany desk. It wasn’t just financial ledgers or family trees. Spread across the polished wood were dozens of black-and-white photographs, all documenting the movements, habits, and daily routines of the young maid currently cowering in the hallway. Some of the photos were dated months before she had even applied for employment at the mansion.

Julian’s breath hitched. Victoria hadn’t just been terrorizing the girl on a whim; she had been systematically stalking her, tracing her lineage back to the very same orphanage where Julian’s sister had mysteriously vanished twenty years ago.

“You’ve been watching her the entire time,” Julian whispered, his grip on Victoria’s wrist tightening painfully.

Victoria stared back at him, her eyes flashing with defiance as she refused to look away from the open doorway. “She isn’t a maid, Julian. She is the living proof of your family’s greatest crime.”

Before Julian could demand an explanation, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the dark corners of the study, followed by the sound of a hidden floorboard shifting beneath the heavy Persian rug.
