Chapter 1 - The First Crack “You’re going to regret this, Julian.”

“Put it down, Victoria.”
“You think you can just waltz in here and disrupt decades of order for a nameless girl?”
“I said, put it down now.”
The tension inside the sprawling hallway crackled like static electricity before a summer storm. Julian stood tall in his tailored black velvet jacket over a pitch-black shirt, his dark wavy hair and trimmed beard framing a face of absolute stone. Victoria glared at him, her long blonde waves cascading over a shimmering beige satin silk robe that draped elegantly against her frame. In her right hand, she loosely gripped a thick leather whip, the very instrument she had just been using to terrorize the young domestic worker huddled on the Persian rug nearby.
Julian’s authoritative command hung heavily in the air, echoing off the dark wooden walls and the warm, flickering glow of the antique wall sconces. Victoria’s chest rose and fell rapidly in a display of restrained fury, her knuckles whitening around the handle of the whip. With a sudden jolt of sheer disbelief, her fingers loosened, and the leather weapon slipped from her grasp, hitting the floor with a dull, heavy thud.
Ignoring her entirely, Julian stepped past her frozen form, his heavy shoes clicking rhythmically against the hardwood. He knelt beside the weeping maid, who wore the traditional black and white uniform complete with a crisp white headband and a delicate silver necklace. Her shoulders shook as she tried to muffle her sobs, her face stained with fresh tears.
“Did she hurt you?” Julian asked, his voice softening into a low, gentle rumble of pure concern.
The young woman looked up, her tear-filled eyes reflecting the warm sconce light as she whispered, “No, sir.”
Julian reached out slowly, ensuring his movements were non-threatening, and gently touched the silver necklace resting against her collarbone. As his fingers brushed the metal, his expression hardened from concern to absolute dread. The pendant wasn’t just a simple piece of jewelry; it was an exact replica of the heirloom he had given his missing sister years ago.
He slowly lifted the pendant closer to his eyes, his breathing catching in his throat as he recognized the faint engraving on the back. It bore the initials of a family secret that Victoria had sworn she knew nothing about.
“Where did you get this necklace?” Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low.

The maid’s eyes widened in sheer terror, and she whispered back, “She made me wear it to mock what she found in your locked safe.”
