Chapter 5 - The Red Wax Seal

The beam of Julian’s flashlight cut sharply through the damp air of the subterranean basement, illuminating the heavy iron door at the bottom of the stairs. The red wax seal stamped across the center of the latch was cracked down the middle, fresh fragments scattered across the cold stone floor like dried blood. Someone had broken this seal very recently, long after Julian had locked the study upstairs.
Julian’s boots crunched softly on the stone as he descended the final step, the oppressive humidity clinging to his black velvet jacket and chilling his skin. The flickering blue light he had seen from above was emanating from a small, heavy-duty monitor resting on a metal utility table just past the iron door. The screen flickered with endless lines of scrolling numerical data—coordinates, financial transactions, and genetic markers.
He reached out slowly and pushed the heavy iron door open. It swung inward with a prolonged, metallic screech that echoed off the vaulted stone ceiling.
Inside the small, windowless room, rows of glass jars lined industrial metal shelving, each one filled with a pale, amber-tinted liquid and labeled with handwritten index numbers that dated back to the nineteen-eighties. But it wasn't the preserved biological samples that caught Julian’s breath; it was the digital audio recorder sitting right in the center of the room on a steel desk, its tiny red recording light blinking steadily in the dark.
Julian froze. He recognized that specific recorder. It belonged to his father, who had supposedly died in a tragic hunting accident twenty-five years ago—the very same year Julian’s younger sister had vanished without a trace from the mansion's grounds.
With trembling fingers, Julian stepped toward the steel desk and pressed the silver playback button. The mechanical click of the tape loading sounded abnormally loud in the silent room.
A burst of heavy static hissed from the tiny speaker, followed immediately by the unmistakable, raspy voice of his late father speaking in frantic, hushed tones.
“If you’re hearing this, Julian, it means Victoria found the vault. She knows the truth about the adoption records. The girl we took in... she isn’t a stranger. She’s the key to the trust fund, and Victoria will do anything—anything—to ensure the bloodline ends tonight.”

Julian spun around instantly, the warning echoing in his ears, just as the heavy iron door behind him slammed shut with a deafening crash, plunging the basement into absolute darkness.
