Chapter 13 - The Pumping Station

The harsh beam of the tactical flashlight cut through the damp air of the service tunnel like a laser, bouncing off the curved brick walls and illuminating the dust motes swirling in the stagnant space. Footsteps echoed loudly against the masonry, closing the distance with terrifying speed.

“Move!” Julian hissed, grabbing Clara’s hand and breaking into a hard sprint down the remaining length of the corridor.

The brick floor grew slicker as they approached the old pumping station—a cavernous subterranean chamber housing towering iron machinery, massive industrial valves, and a tangled web of rusted pipes that vibrated with the distant hum of the mansion's automated systems. A thick iron ladder mounted against the far wall led straight up to a heavy circular hatch stamped with a yellow hazard symbol, marking the exit beyond the perimeter wall.

Julian shoved Clara toward the ladder. “Climb! Don’t look back!”

Clara grabbed the cold iron rungs, her fingers slipping slightly before she found her footing and began ascending rapidly, her black-and-white uniform brushing against the rusted metal framework.

Julian turned back, planting his feet firmly at the base of the ladder as the heavy footsteps rounded the final curve of the brick tunnel. Two security guards in tactical gear emerged from the shadows, their flashlights blindingly bright as they aimed their weapons straight toward him.

“Stay where you are, Mr. Vance!” the lead guard shouted, his voice echoing menacingly off the iron machinery of the pumping station. “Orders from the board are to secure all remaining parties inside the perimeter.”

Julian didn't flinch. He reached into his inner pocket, pulling out the brass skeleton key and holding it up in the harsh light. “The board doesn’t own this estate anymore. The primary heir just cleared the security protocol.”

“Sir, drop the key!” the second guard barked, stepping forward with his hand resting heavily on his holster.

Above them, a loud metallic clank rang out as Clara successfully spun the wheel on the heavy circular hatch, throwing it open to flood the dark chamber with the pale, cool light of dawn. Fresh morning air rushed down into the subterranean room, carrying the scent of dew and open fields.

Before the guards could raise their weapons to stop her, Clara pushed the heavy iron hatch all the way open and scrambled out into the freedom of the estate's outer grounds. At that exact moment, Julian dropped flat to the concrete floor, hooking his foot around a massive, rusted floor valve and twisting it with all his might.

A deafening hiss of high-pressure steam erupted from the industrial pipes overhead, instantly filling the pumping station with a dense, blinding white cloud that completely obscured the guards' vision.
