Chapter 14 - Dawn at the Perimeter

The high-pressure steam roared from the ruptured industrial pipes, filling the cavernous pumping station with an impenetrable wall of white mist. Shouts of disorientation echoed from the guards as they stumbled backward, coughing against the sudden heat and moisture.
Julian didn't hesitate. He scrambled up the iron ladder hand over hand, his boots clanging against the rungs as he hauled himself upward through the open circular hatch. He burst out into the cool, amber light of early dawn, the crisp morning air rushing into his lungs as he rolled onto the damp grass just beyond the mansion’s towering wrought-iron perimeter wall.
Clara was already standing a few yards away, her breath misting in the chill air as she looked back at the sprawling estate. The grand Victorian mansion loomed in the background, its dark wooden walls and glowing amber sconces standing as a silent monument to decades of deceit and hidden secrets.
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second as state police cruisers, tipped off by an anonymous emergency protocol Julian had triggered from his phone before entering the service tunnel, raced up the long winding access road toward the main gates.
“They’re coming,” Clara whispered, her hands clasped tightly around the silver necklace resting against her collarbone. Her reflection in the dew-covered grass showed a woman who had finally stepped out of the shadows of a manufactured ghost story and into reality.
Julian stood up, brushing the dirt and soot from his black velvet double-breasted suit jacket. His dark wavy hair was slightly disheveled, and his breathing was heavy, but his expression was one of profound, hard-won peace. The elaborate web of lies constructed by his father and ruthlessly maintained by Victoria was finally unraveling at the seams.
Through the wrought-iron bars of the perimeter gate, they could see the trustees' black SUVs surrounded by flashing red and blue police lights. Officers were already swarming the front entrance, while Victoria stood on the grand porch wrapped in her beige satin silk robe, flanked by armed security guards. She wasn't fighting the officers; she simply stood there, staring directly across the lawn toward Julian and Clara with a cold, unreadable expression before turning slowly and walking back inside the mansion as the heavy oak doors closed behind her.
“It’s over,” Julian said softly, stepping closer to his sister and placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “The estate is yours by charter. The truth is out.”
Clara looked up at him, a faint, genuine smile breaking through her exhaustion. “It’s not just an estate, Julian. It’s a beginning.”

Before Julian could answer, a State Police cruiser pulled up sharply beside the perimeter wall, the driver’s side window rolling down to reveal a senior detective looking directly at them with a stern, questioning gaze.
