Chapter 9 - Smoke And Sirens

The thick, acrid black smoke billowed down the stone stairwell like a creeping phantom, instantly choking the damp air of the crypt. Emergency alarms shrieked from the church above, their high-pitched wails mingling with the approaching sirens outside.

"Daddy! I can't breathe!" Maya coughed violently, burying her face into the fabric of Julian’s tuxedo jacket.

Julian scooped Maya up into his arms once more, pulling her tight against his chest while cradling little Leo with his forearm. The smoke was thick and toxic, stinging their eyes and burning their throats.

"Stay low! Hold your breath!" Julian commanded, coughing harshly himself as he navigated the blinding haze toward the far corner of the subterranean chamber.

Arthur and Clara were coughing uncontrollably near the altar. Clara was screaming hysterically, pawing blindly at the stone floor in a desperate attempt to find an exit. "Arthur! Help me! We're going to burn down here!"

"Shut up and find the service hatch!" Arthur wheezed, his voice hoarse from the smoke as he stumbled blindly against the marble crypts.

Julian knew the layout of the old church better than anyone. Beneath the eastern wall of the crypt lay a secondary escape hatch built for emergency evacuations during the Victorian era, leading directly out to the open courtyard behind the property.

Kneeling near a crumbling stone pillar, Julian felt along the baseboard until his fingers brushed against a heavy iron ring. With a grunt of effort, he heaved upward. The rusted iron bolt groaned loudly before sliding free with a sharp snap. A heavy metal grate swung open, letting in a rush of cool, clean night air.

"Come on, Maya. We're almost out," Julian gasped, pushing the girl through the narrow opening first. She scrambled out into the rain-soaked grass outside, taking deep, grateful gulps of fresh air.

Julian carefully slid little Leo through the opening, resting the blanket-wrapped infant gently beside Maya before pulling himself up and out of the suffocating crypt.

As they hit the open courtyard, the chaotic scene of a major law enforcement operation unfolded before them. At least half a dozen police cruisers and federal black SUVs surrounded the front and back entrances of St. Jude’s Chapel. Red and blue emergency lights flashed violently against the Gothic architecture, painting the falling rain in electric hues.

Paramedics rushed forward immediately, shouting instructions and holding out emergency oxygen masks.

"Over here! We need medical attention for the children!" Julian shouted over the wailing sirens, waving his arm frantically to catch the attention of a nearby rescue team.

Two paramedics sprinted over, wrapping thermal blankets around Maya and little Leo while checking their vital signs. Maya clutched Julian’s hand with a death grip, refusing to let go even as the medics placed an oxygen mask over her face.

Just then, a senior federal investigator in a waterproof trench coat stepped out from the flashing lights, his badge gleaming in the rain. He approached Julian with a stern, authoritative stride, flanked by two armed officers.

"Are you Julian Vance?" the investigator asked sharply.

Julian stood tall, squaring his shoulders despite his ruined tuxedo and soot-stained face. He pulled the small voice recorder and the faded photograph from his inner pocket, handing them directly to the agent.

"I am," Julian replied, his voice steady and cold. "And I have a complete confession regarding corporate fraud, kidnapping, and attempted murder recorded on that device. But before you arrest anyone else... there is one more person inside that church you need to find."

The investigator raised an eyebrow, taking the evidence. "Who?"

May you like

Julian pointed back toward the burning chapel. "Elena Vance. She isn't dead."
