Chapter 6 - Descent Into The Crypt

The heavy dial tone buzzed monotonously in Julian’s ear before he slammed the receiver back onto its cradle. The synthesized voice echoed in his mind, carrying a chilling familiarity beneath its digital distortion. Someone inside his own inner circle—someone who knew the deepest, darkest secrets of the Vance family history—was pulling the strings from the shadows.
"Daddy, who was on the phone?" Maya asked, her voice trembling as she clutched little Leo closer to her chest. The infant stirred, letting out a soft, distressed cry that amplified the crushing tension in the small vestry.
Julian knelt beside her, forcing a calm, reassuring smile onto his face despite the storm raging inside him. "Just an old friend, sweetheart. We need to move. Stay right behind me, and no matter what you hear or see, don't let go of my coat."
He checked the heavy lock on the door leading back into the main chapel. The pounding had stopped, replaced by an eerie, suffocating silence. The security guards must have realized the vestry had a secondary exit leading outside.
Julian pushed open the side door, revealing a narrow, stone-paved alleyway flanked by towering Gothic buttresses. A cold autumn drizzle was falling, turning the cobblestones slick and shimmering under the amber glow of distant streetlamps.
"Keep your head down," Julian instructed quietly, guiding Maya out into the damp night air.
They moved quickly along the perimeter of St. Jude’s Chapel, heading toward the old family crypt situated in the overgrown historic cemetery behind the church grounds. The iron wrought-iron gates of the crypt stood slightly ajar, casting deep, jagged shadows across the overgrown grass. A single flickering lantern sat on the top step, casting a sickly yellow light over the heavy stone steps leading down into the subterranean darkness.
Julian paused at the threshold, his nostrils catching the familiar, damp scent of ancient stone, decaying wreaths, and damp earth. This was where generations of Vance patriarchs were laid to rest—a mausoleum built to house pride, power, and deadly secrets.
"Is Momma down there?" Maya whispered, staring down into the dark stairwell with wide, fearful eyes.
"I don't know, Maya," Julian answered honestly, his hand tightening around the heavy silver family crest pendant in his pocket. "Only one way to find out."
They descended the stairs carefully, the echoes of their footsteps bouncing off the stone walls. The air grew noticeably colder with every step downward, wrapping around them like a frozen shroud. Rows of marble crypts stretched out on either side, their brass plaques gleaming faintly in the dim light of Julian’s smartphone flashlight.
At the very center of the subterranean chamber stood a large, circular stone altar, traditionally used for memorial services. Standing beside the altar, cloaked in the deep shadows cast by a towering stone angel, was a tall, unmistakable silhouette.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks, pulling Maya behind him.
"I knew you'd come, Julian," a smooth, chilling voice purred from the darkness.
A figure stepped forward into the circle of lantern light, and Julian’s breath caught in his throat. It wasn't Clara. It was someone Julian trusted even more—someone who had held the keys to the Vance estate for over thirty years.
May you like
"You," Julian whispered, his eyes widening in utter disbelief as the full, devastating scope of the betrayal finally came into sharp focus.
