Chapter 4 - Men In Dark Suits

The heavy oak doors of St. Jude’s Chapel swung fully open, driven by a cold autumn gust that swept up the marble aisle. Four men in identical charcoal-gray suits stepped inside with synchronized precision. Their broad shoulders, unyielding posture, and identical sunglasses worn indoors immediately signaled that they were not wedding guests. They were private security operatives—the kind employed exclusively by corporate conglomerates and ultra-wealthy dynasties to manage crises that could never make the morning papers.

Julian instinctively pulled Maya slightly behind him, shielding her and the infant from the newcomers. His jaw tightened.

"Step aside," Julian ordered, his voice cutting through the ambient murmurs of the stunned congregation.

The lead operative, a tall man with a jagged scar across his left jawline, did not flinch. He adjusted his earpiece, his eyes flicking past Julian to lock onto Clara at the altar. A subtle nod passed between Clara and the operative—a silent, practiced communication that did not go unnoticed by Julian.

"Mr. Vance," the lead operative said smoothly, his voice devoid of any warmth or respect. "Under directive 4B of the Vance-Sterling corporate governance charter, you are currently compromised. We are here to escort you and unauthorized minors off the premises to ensure stability for the shareholders."

Julian’s blood boiled. "Corporate charter? This is a wedding, not a board meeting! Get out of my way before I have you all arrested for trespassing and abduction."

"There is no wedding, Julian," Clara called out from the altar. Her voice had shifted from panic to an icy, chilling composure. She smoothed the front of her white dress, stepping down from the raised platform with deliberate, predatory grace. The fragility she had displayed moments earlier was completely gone, replaced by the hardened steel of a woman who had spent years planning every possible contingency.

Julian stared at her in disbelief. "What did you just say?"

Clara stopped ten feet away, her blue eyes gleaming with an eerie, triumphant light. "The moment you signed the financial restructuring papers last night, Julian, you transferred primary voting rights of the Vance estate to the Sterling Foundation. Legally speaking, you are a minority shareholder in your own family's legacy. And these gentlemen," she gestured toward the guards, "answer to the board now. Not to you."

A collective gasp rippled through the pews. Several high-profile guests hastily reached for their smartphones, recording the unprecedented corporate coup disguised as a catastrophic wedding meltdown.

Maya clutched the fabric of Julian’s tuxedo pants, whimpering softly. "Daddy, I'm scared."

"Don't be scared, sweetheart," Julian murmured down to her, never breaking eye contact with Clara. He felt a cold fury unlike anything he had ever experienced. Every dinner party, every polite conversation, every shared smile over the past three years had been a carefully constructed chess move designed to strip him of his heritage and silence his true bloodline.

"You orchestrated this entire thing," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal hum. "Elena... the crash... the disappearance. You arranged it all back then, didn't you?"

Clara tilted her head, a chilling smile touching the corners of her lips. "Elena was weak, Julian. She couldn't handle the pressure of the Vance name. I merely gave her a gentle push toward an early retirement. It’s a shame she managed to hide two little reminders before she vanished for good."

The guards advanced another step, their heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. The lead operative reached out, his hand hovering inches from Maya’s shoulder, ready to snatch the children away by force.

Julian’s hand dropped to his side, his fingers curling into a tight fist. He knew he couldn't fight four trained operatives bare-handed, especially with two children in the crossfire. His mind raced frantically, searching for an escape route through the vestry doors behind the altar.

Just as the guard's fingers brushed Maya's cardigan, the lights in the cathedral flickered violently once, twice, and then plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
