Chapter 10 - The Resurrection Of Elena

The investigator’s eyes narrowed sharply as he processed Julian’s words. "Elena Vance? The woman reported dead in a vehicle explosion twenty-two years ago? Mr. Vance, that case was closed by federal authorities decades ago."
"It was closed because my uncle Arthur and Clara falsified the death certificate and bribed the responding coroner," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute, chilling certainty. He pointed toward the heavy side doors of the chapel, where firefighters were battling thick plumes of smoke billowing from the vestry. "She didn't die in that crash. She was hidden away, silenced to protect a fraudulent empire."
Maya tugged urgently on Julian’s coat sleeve, her tear-stained face looking up at him with wide, pleading eyes. "Momma isn't in the crypt, Daddy. When we left the cabin this morning, she said she was coming to the church to stop the wedding herself."
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. A cold wave of dread washed over him. "She's inside the burning building."
Without waiting for the federal agent’s permission, Julian ripped off his ruined suit jacket, tossing it onto a paramedic’s gurney, and bolted toward the side entrance of the chapel.
"Sir! Stop right there! You can't go back in there!" a firefighter shouted, reaching out to grab Julian’s arm, but Julian ducked past him with desperate agility.
He plunged back into the burning building. The heat was oppressive, thick with the smell of scorched velvet, burning orchids, and acrid smoke. Flames licked greedily up the wooden paneling of the vestry walls, casting dancing, demonic shadows across the ruined altar.
"Elena!" Julian roared, coughing violently as the toxic haze burned his lungs. "Elena!"
He pushed his way through the collapsing debris, kicking aside fallen floral arrangements and splintered pews. As he reached the private clergy chambers behind the altar, he saw a crumpled figure lying motionless on the floor near the open vestry door.
Through the thick smoke and dancing flames, Julian spotted silver hair and a familiar green wool coat—the exact coat from the old faded photograph.
"Elena!" Julian cried out, rushing forward and dropping to his knees beside her.
She was unconscious, her face pale, and her breathing dangerously shallow. Without hesitation, Julian scooped her up into his arms, ignoring the intense heat radiating from the burning ceiling beams directly above them.
He turned and sprinted back toward the exit, his boots sliding against the slick, water-soaked marble floor. Just as a heavy wooden beam crashed down directly behind them, blocking the hallway entirely, Julian burst through the side doors out into the cool, rain-washed courtyard.
Paramedics rushed forward instantly, grabbing Elena from his arms and placing her onto a stretcher with swift, professional efficiency.
"She's alive! Get her oxygen now!" Julian yelled, collapsing to his knees on the wet grass, gasping for air as his chest heaved in ragged breaths.
Maya ran over, throwing her arms around Julian’s neck while sobbing into his shoulder. "Is Momma okay? Is she going to wake up?"
Julian held the little girl tight, pressing a kiss to the top of her tangled brown hair. "She's going to be fine, Maya. I promise you."
Nearby, federal agents were dragging Arthur and Clara out in handcuffs. Arthur’s expensive overcoat was stained with soot, and Clara was weeping uncontrollably, her ruined white wedding dress trailing in the muddy ground as she was shoved into the back of a police cruiser.
Julian watched them go, feeling a profound sense of closure washing over him at last. But as the paramedics loaded Elena into the back of the ambulance, her eyelids suddenly fluttered open, and she reached out, grabbing Julian’s wrist with surprising strength.

"Julian..." she whispered hoarsely, her voice barely audible over the sirens. "There is something... something you need to know about the night we were separated."
