Chapter 5 - Darkness And Whispers

The sudden plunging of St. Jude’s Chapel into absolute darkness triggered an immediate wave of panic among the high-society guests. Shouts of confusion echoed off the stone walls as velvet-cushioned pews scraped against the floor and expensive crystal champagne flutes shattered somewhere near the back rows.
In the sudden gloom, Julian did not hesitate. Operating purely on raw instinct and adrenaline, he scooped Maya up into his free arm, keeping his other arm securely wrapped around the blanket-bundled infant, little Leo.
"Stay close to me, Maya. Don't let go," Julian whispered fiercely into the girl's ear, feeling her small arms wrap tightly around his neck in response.
"Mr. Vance is moving! Secure the targets!" the gravelly voice of the lead security operative cut through the chaos from a few yards away. Heavy footsteps thudded against the marble floor, accompanied by the distinct metallic click of a tactical flashlight sliding out of its holster. A bright beam of white LED light sliced through the darkness, sweeping wildly across the pews and missing Julian by mere inches.
Julian ducked behind the towering oak structure of the baptismal font, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged bird. He could hear Clara’s voice ringing out above the din, sharp and frantic.
"Find them! Do not let them reach the vestry exit! If they get outside with those children, everything we've built is gone!" Clara screeched, her carefully cultivated composure completely fracturing under the pressure of the dark.
Julian navigated the shadows with the familiarity of someone who had spent his childhood exploring every shadowy corner of the family estate. He reached the heavy wooden door of the vestry, pressing his weight against the brass handle. To his immense relief, it gave way with a quiet, muffled click.
As they slipped inside the small, windowless room used for clergy preparations, Julian pulled the heavy door shut, locking the brass deadlock from the inside just as a heavy fist pounded against the outer panels.
"Open up, Vance! You can't escape the property!" the guard shouted from the other side, rattling the knob furiously.
Julian ignored him, setting Maya and the baby down gently onto a plush velvet armchair. The room was illuminated only by the faint, greenish glow of an emergency exit sign above the side door leading directly into the courtyard alleys.
Maya was trembling, tears silently tracking down her cheeks. "Are they going to take us back to the bad place, Daddy?"
Julian knelt before her, wiping a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb. His face was a mask of fierce, unyielding determination. "Never. I swear to you, Maya, nobody will ever hurt you or your brother again. We are going to finish what your mother started."
As he spoke, a soft beep echoed from the corner of the vestry. Julian turned his head sharply toward the sound. Sitting on the mahogany clergy desk was an old, landline telephone with its red message light blinking rhythmically in the dim emergency light.
Before Julian could take a step toward it, the phone began to ring—a sharp, shrill sound that pierced the quiet room like a siren.
Julian stared at the blinking device. Hesitantly, he crossed the room, picked up the heavy receiver, and pressed it to his ear.
"Hello?" Julian demanded.
A distorted, heavily synthesized voice crackled through the earpiece, sending a cold shiver straight down his spine. "If you want to know what really happened to Elena twenty years ago, Julian, drop the children at the courtyard gate and come alone to the crypt."

The line went dead, leaving behind a hollow, deafening dial tone.
