Chapter 8: The Morning After

By sunrise, the story had obliterated New York’s social and financial columns.

A high-profile guest at the wedding had recorded the ballroom confrontation on their phone, leaking both Arthur Sterling’s speech and the security video to the internet. By 8:00 AM, the footage of the groom striking his mother's gift and shoving her to the floor had garnered over twenty million views across global platforms.

Outside Michael and Vanessa’s luxury penthouse in Tribeca, news vans and paparazzi formed an impenetrable blockade.

Inside, the atmosphere was poisonous.

""Fix this!"" Vanessa screamed, hurling a crystal vase against the kitchen island. ""My father’s credit lines were frozen at midnight! The board of my charity demanded my resignation this morning! Call your mother and make her issue a public statement!""

Michael sat on the sofa, clutching his head in his hands. His phone was ringing incessantly—investors in his tech startup were pulling their term sheets, and his primary venture capital partner had just sent a formal notice terminating his CEO contract.

""She won't answer,"" Michael choked out. ""I called her ten times. It goes straight to voicemail.""

""Then go down there on your knees!"" Vanessa shrieked, her eyes wild with terror. ""Don't you understand? If Uncle Arthur cuts us off, we have nothing! The penthouse is leased under the corporate trust! The cars are leased! We are ruined!""

Michael looked up at his bride. For the first time, the veil of glamour fell away completely. He saw no love, no loyalty, and no warmth—only the vicious, frantic panic of a parasite whose host had vanished.
