Chapter 4: The Ledger of Blood and Sweat

Vanessa adjusted her gown, stepping forward with her most practiced, radiant smile. ""Uncle Arthur, we are so honored. Michael has prepared a presentation regarding his tech firm's integration into the Sterling logistics wing.""
""Has he?"" Arthur asked, stopping five paces from the newlyweds. The room was so quiet that the faint hum of the air conditioning sounded like a roar. ""Before we discuss corporate integration, I believe there is a matter of accounts to settle.""
Michael smiled nervously. ""Accounts, sir? If this is about the seed capital for the upcoming quarter—""
""No, Michael,"" Arthur interrupted. ""I am speaking of a debt that spans thirty-two years.""
Arthur gestured slightly. Thomas stepped forward, carrying a large rolling flat-screen display and positioning it beside the bridal stage.
""Every empire rests on a foundation,"" Arthur continued, his voice echoing across the gilded ballroom. ""Some believe that foundation is made of contracts and capital. But true foundation is made of sacrifice. Julian, do you remember who funded your first venture when the banks foreclosed in ninety-four?""
Julian blinked, sweat beading on his forehead. ""That was... a private silent partner, Uncle.""
""Her name was Eleanor Vance,"" Arthur said clearly.
Michael froze. His champagne flute tilted, spilling pale golden liquid onto his cuff. ""What?""
""Your mother,"" Arthur said, turning his gaze fully onto Michael. ""When your father died in the shipyard collapse, she received a modest settlement. When our family’s original maritime firm faced bankruptcy, she invested every cent of that settlement to keep four hundred working-class families employed. She never asked for dividends. She asked only for one thing: that when you grew up, you would be given an honest chance to earn your own way.""
A murmur rippled through the guests. Vanessa’s face drained of color.
May you like
""And how did you repay that foundation today, Michael?"" Arthur asked softly.
