The grand ballroom of the St. Regis was a cathedral of floral arches, floating candles, and vintage champagne. Three hundred elites from Manhattan and New England clinked flutes, marveling at the union between the ambitious young tech executive Michael Vance and Vanessa Sterling, the socialite niece of the reclusive titan Arthur Sterling.

Michael stood beneath the crystal chandeliers, holding a glass of Dom Pérignon, basking in the congratulatory pats on his back. For years, he had felt suffocated by his mother’s humble rowhouse, the scent of lavender soap, and the worn-out kitchen table where she patched linens late into the night. Suddenly, the heavy bronze doors at the back of the ballroom creaked open. The ambient chatter faded like a dying breeze.

Arthur Sterling stepped into the room.
