Chapter 14: The Return of the Prodigal

Late that night, after the gala concluded, Eleanor returned to her modest Queens home. Despite her immense wealth, she had refused to leave the neighborhood where she had built her life. She had simply renovated the local community center and repaired the homes of her elderly neighbors.

The winter snow fell softly, coating the porch in a silent white blanket.

As the town car pulled away, Eleanor walked up the front path. She stopped.

Sitting on the bottom step of the porch, shivering in a worn wool jacket, was Michael. His face was thin, his hair dusted with snow, his hands tucked deep into his pockets.

He looked up. When he saw his mother, he did not run toward her. He did not make excuses. He slowly stood up, stepped down onto the snowy path, and dropped to both knees in the freezing slush, bowing his head to the ground.

""Mom,"" Michael whispered, his voice trembling violently. ""I don't come to ask for your money. I don't ask for a single dollar. I don't even ask you to call me your son.""

Eleanor stood motionless, looking down at him.

Michael reached into his coat pocket and placed an object gently on the snow before her. It was his father's antique Omega pocket watch. He had spent three months of warehouse wages to have an expert horologist replace the shattered crystal with sapphire glass, polish the brass casing, and restore the movement to perfect working order.

""I fixed it, Mom,"" Michael sobbed, tears cutting lines through the dust on his cheeks. ""I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry for what I did to you.""
