Chapter 11: The Bitter Dissolution

Within two months, the Sterling illusion completely collapsed.

Without Arthur’s financial umbrella, Julian Sterling’s speculative real estate firm went into bankruptcy. Creditors seized their luxury vehicles, country club memberships, and estates.

In Tribeca, the marriage that began with a multi-million-dollar spectacle ended in a cold, bitter courtroom. Vanessa filed for an annulment, attempting to claim whatever remaining assets Michael possessed. But there was nothing left to take. Michael’s tech startup folded completely after clients refused to associate with his brand. His reputation in Silicon Alley was radioactive; no firm would hire an executive whose public identity was synonymous with elder abuse and filial betrayal.

On the day the divorce was finalized, Michael walked out of the Manhattan supreme court building alone.

Vanessa passed him on the courthouse steps, wearing a simple black coat, her entourage gone. She didn't look at him.

""Vanessa,"" Michael called out, his voice hollow.

She paused, looking at him with pure disgust. ""Don't speak to me, Michael. Marrying you was the greatest mistake of my life. You promised me an empire, and you brought me ruin.""

""I gave up my mother for you!"" Michael shouted, his voice echoing in the chilly autumn air.

Vanessa sneered, stepping into a modest yellow cab. ""A man who would throw away his own mother for a social status will throw away anyone. You deserved everything you got.""

The cab pulled away, leaving Michael standing on the concrete steps, stripped of his fortune, his pride, and his illusions.
