Chapter 7: The Unseen Shield
By Thursday morning, Mr. Carver returned to The Breadline expecting to find Evelyn packing her bags in defeat. Instead, he found a crowd of over fifty local townspeople gathered on the boardwalk outside the bakery.
Fishermen, shopkeepers, teachers, and elderly residents stood shoulder to shoulder, holding handwritten signs that read: PROTECT LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES and CEDAR HAVEN IS NOT FOR SALE. In front of the bakery stood Marcus and several burly dockworkers, arms crossed, quietly blocking the entrance.
Carver stepped out of his black luxury car, his brow furrowing in irritation. ""Clear the way. This property is under legal foreclosure.""
Marcus stepped forward. ""This property is under community inspection, friend. And right now, we find your presence hazardous to our town's health.""
""You are breaking state law,"" Carver snapped, reaching into his coat for his phone. ""I will have the state police clear this street in ten minutes.""
""Go ahead,"" a female voice called out.
The crowd parted as Evelyn walked to the front. Next to her was a young reporter with a camera and a heavy recording microphone.
""This is Sarah Jenkins from the State Herald,"" Evelyn announced calmly. ""We've spent the last thirty-six hours transferring public records and corporate audit files to the Attorney General's financial crimes division.""
Carver's slick expression faltered. ""You're bluffing.""
""Check your phone, Mr. Carver,"" Evelyn said softly. ""The state court just issued a temporary injunction halting all foreclosure actions by Vance Holdings pending an investigation into fraudulent asset acquisition.""

Carver hastily pulled out his phone. His screen flashed with urgent incoming calls from Victoria Vance's legal team. His face drained of color as he listened to the panicked voice on the other end.
The townspeople broke into cheers. Evelyn looked at Carver and said quietly, ""Tell Victoria that I am no longer hiding. If she wants Arthur's truth, she can come look me in the eye herself.""
