Chapter 10: Confrontation at the Shore

The black limousine pulled up to the harbor promenade of Cedar Haven on a quiet Saturday afternoon. Victoria Vance stepped out, wearing a tailored charcoal wool coat and dark gloves. She walked down the boardwalk, her high heels clicking sharply against the timber.

She stopped outside The Breadline. Through the window, she saw Evelyn sitting at a small table, helping Lily write her alphabet letters in a workbook.

Victoria pushed the door open. The small brass bell above the door chimed softly.

Evelyn looked up. She didn't flinch. She gently patted Lily's shoulder. ""Lily, sweetie, go play in the kitchen with Miss Clara for a few minutes.""

Once Lily had scurried into the back room, Evelyn stood up, meeting Victoria's cold gaze across the empty bakery.

""Inside this envelope is a certified cashier's check for five million dollars,"" Victoria said smoothly, placing a white envelope on the table. ""Along with a deed to a private estate in Vermont. In return, you will sign a document stating that the financial records you provided were outdated, misunderstood drafts created by Arthur before his passing.""

Evelyn looked down at the envelope, then raised her eyes to look directly into Victoria's face.

""Five million dollars,"" Evelyn repeated softly. ""You really believe that everything in this world has a price tag, don't you?""

""Don't be naive, Evelyn,"" Victoria snapped, her calm veneer slipping. ""With that money, Lily can go to the finest schools in Europe. She can have trust funds, security, prestige! What can you offer her here? Sea-glass and flour dust?""

Evelyn walked around the table, standing just inches from the matriarch.

""I can offer her truth,"" Evelyn said, her voice resonant with unshakeable power. ""I can teach her that her dignity is not for sale. I can teach her never to bow to people who treat human beings like chess pieces. Keep your five million dollars, Victoria. You're going to need every penny of it for your legal defense.""
