THE UNBROKEN BOND

Dawn broke over the coastal town of Cedar Haven in shades of soft pink and pale slate blue. The smell of salt water and pine needles filled the morning air as the bus ground to a halt at the small seaside terminal.

Evelyn carried a sleeping Lily out into the crisp breeze. Cedar Haven was a quiet town where wooden piers stretched out into gentle gray waves, and steep streets were lined with weathered clapboard cottages and small family shops. It was as far from the cold marble and glass of the Vance empire as one could get.

With her remaining savings, Evelyn rented a small, furnished attic room above an old coastal bakery named The Breadline. The owner, a widow named Clara with silver hair and warm, tired eyes, looked at Evelyn’s torn evening shoes and the quiet girl in her arms, but asked no intrusive questions.

""Twenty dollars a night, breakfast included,"" Clara said, passing over a brass key attached to a wooden fob. ""Hot water takes a minute, but the view of the bay is worth the wait.""

""Thank you, Clara,"" Evelyn said softly. ""I'll pay you for the whole week.""

The attic room was simple: a wooden bed with a hand-stitched floral quilt, a small writing desk, and a window that overlooked the harbor where fishing boats rocked gently on the tide. For the first time in years, Evelyn felt the knots in her stomach begin to loosen.

That afternoon, after washing their clothes and dressing Lily in a soft wool sweater bought from a secondhand store, Evelyn sat by the window. Lily sat on the floor, using colored pencils to draw boats on scrap paper.

""Look, Mommy,"" Lily said, holding up her drawing. ""It's our boat. It has a big yellow sail.""

""It's beautiful, sweetie,"" Evelyn smiled, crouching down to hug her. ""You know what? We're going to stay here for a while.""
