Chapter 6: Small Beginnings

That evening, the back room of The Breadline was lit by the warm glow of oil lamps. Clara sat at the wooden table alongside Mr. Henderson and Marcus, a local harbor captain whose daughter went to kindergarten with Lily.

Evelyn stood before them, her voice filled with deep remorse. ""I am so sorry. All of this is because of me. The Vance family is using their money to break me, but they are hurting you instead. I will leave town tonight.""

""Sit down, girl,"" Clara said firmly, slapping her hand on the wooden table.

Evelyn paused, surprised.

""I've lived in Cedar Haven my whole life,"" Clara continued, her eyes blazing with stubborn defiance. ""We don't bow down to bullies with shiny shoes and big bank accounts.""

Marcus, the burly captain, nodded slowly. ""My girl comes home every day talking about how sweet little Lily is. That suit across the street thinks money buys everything. He doesn't know this town.""

""What can we do?"" Mr. Henderson asked. ""The bank legally holds Clara's mortgage.""

Evelyn looked at the faces around the table. For months, she had thought she was alone, fighting a titan with nothing but her own two hands. But here, in this humble kitchen, she saw something Victoria Vance could never buy: genuine human solidarity.

""We don't fight them in their arena,"" Evelyn said, a spark of resolve returning to her eyes. ""Inside Arthur's journal is proof of how Victoria Vance diverted millions of dollars from public library grants and children's welfare funds into shell companies—including the very financial group that bought Clara's mortgage. If we go to the regional press, we don't just defend this bakery. We expose them.""

Marcus grinned. ""I happen to have a cousin who runs the main newspaper in the county capital. He loves nothing more than knocking arrogant billionaires off their high horses.""
