Chapter 7

Julian Vance stepped into the cramped holding room, his eyes darting between Noah, Amelia, and the scattered documents on the table. His chest heaved as he fought to control his breathing, his expensive silk tie slightly askew.
"What is the meaning of this?" Julian demanded, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. He pointed a shaking finger at Noah. "You outbid us by twenty million dollars for a worthless piece of antique junk? Are you completely out of your mind, or are you working for someone who wants to ruin us?"
Amelia stood up slowly from her chair, smoothing the fabric of her red dress. The paralyzing fear that had gripped her in the ballroom was gone, replaced by a cold, searing clarity she had inherited from the father she thought she knew.
"Julian," Amelia said, her voice cutting through the room like broken glass. "It's not junk. It's my father's property."
Julian sneered, his gaze shifting to his niece with undisguised contempt. "Your father was a ruined fraud, Amelia. He died with nothing, and you've spent your entire adult life scraping by because he left you nothing but debt. If you think buying some sentimental trinket changes your social standing, you're even more delusional than I thought."
"Keep talking, Julian," Noah said calmly, remaining seated. He slowly stood up, buttoning his jacket, towering over Julian by several inches. "Every word you say is being recorded by the federal compliance officers stationed in the corridor."
Julian’s sneer faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the open door where two federal marshals in tactical vests stood quietly in the shadows.
"You can't intimidate me with theatrical stunts," Julian snarled, though his voice lacked its initial thunder. "That necklace was legally acquired through public liquidation ten years ago. We hold the court-ordered bill of sale."

"A bill of sale rendered null and void the moment fraud was proven in the initial probate filing," Marcus Vance spoke up, stepping forward from the shadows with a pristine document in his hand. He held up a federal court seal. "Signed by a federal judge three hours ago, granting an immediate seizure of all assets associated with the Vance-Industries hostile takeover of 1999."
Julian’s face drained of all color. He looked from Marcus to Noah, finally realizing the true scope of the ambush. They hadn't just bought a necklace; they had executed a legally binding checkmate.
