Chapter 12: Leaving the Gala

The exit doors of the grand hotel opened out into the crisp autumn air of the city street. Streetlights cast long, golden reflections across the wet asphalt from a light drizzle that had fallen earlier in the evening. A fleet of black luxury sedans lined the curb, their engines humming quietly in the midnight chill.

As Noah and Amelia walked down the wide stone steps of the entrance, they passed a cluster of reporters and financial journalists who were frantically typing on their phones, buzzing with rumors about an unexpected federal raid inside the executive suite. Julian Vance had already been escorted away by federal agents, his multi-billion-dollar corporate facade crumbling into public disgrace.

A sleek black town car pulled up directly in front of them, the driver stepping out quickly to open the rear door. Noah guided Amelia inside, sliding in beside her as the heavy door closed with a satisfying, muffled thud, shutting out the noise of the flashing camera lights and hurried whispers.

Inside the quiet cabin, the leather seats were warm and comfortable. Amelia leaned her head against Noah’s shoulder, watching the city lights blur past the tinted windows as the car pulled away from the curb and merged into the smooth flow of late-night traffic.

"Do you realize what this means for us tomorrow?" Amelia asked quietly, her fingers entwining with his. "We don't have to look over our shoulders anymore. The company, the patents, the foundation—it's all back where it belongs."

"It means we can finally build our future without the shadow of the past hanging over us," Noah replied, kissing the top of her head. "We can travel, we can fund the clean-energy projects your father originally dreamed of, and we can finally take a proper vacation that doesn't involve federal subpoenas."

Amelia laughed softly, the sound bubbling up from a place of deep, unburdened joy she hadn't felt since she was a little girl. "A vacation sounds wonderful. Somewhere quiet. Without auctions, diamonds, or scheming cousins."

"Agreed. Paris in the spring?" Noah suggested with a faint smile.

"Paris sounds perfect," Amelia sighed, closing her eyes as the car glided smoothly through the empty downtown streets toward the townhouse that was now, truly and securely, their home.
