Chapter 4

The backstage area of the charity gala was a stark contrast to the glittering ballroom. Stripped of chandeliers and ambient music, the concrete corridors smelled of industrial cleaner and damp plaster. Two security guards led Noah and Amelia toward a private holding room marked with a simple brass plaque reading Executive Acquisitions.
Amelia walked on stiff legs, her red dress rustling against the stark walls. Every step felt heavier than the last. The sheer absurdity of what had just transpired warped her perception of reality. How could Noah possibly afford twenty million dollars? They lived comfortably, but not that comfortably. Unless he had been keeping a colossal secret from her throughout their entire marriage—a double life, a hidden inheritance, or something far more dangerous.
"Noah, stop walking for one second," Amelia demanded, pulling her arm free from his grasp as they reached the heavy oak door of the holding room. She turned to face him under the harsh, flickering fluorescent lights. "I am not walking into that room until you tell me whose money we just spent. If you took out illegal loans, if you mortgaged our future to a loan shark, I need to know right now so I can prepare for the fallout."
Noah paused, turning to face her with infinite patience. He reached out and gently brushed a stray lock of brown hair away from her forehead, his touch remarkably tender given the gravity of the situation.
"I didn't take out any loans, Amelia," Noah said softly. "The money comes from an account that was established twenty-five years ago. An escrow account bearing your father's signature, designed to release funds only when the primary asset—the necklace—was successfully recovered by a direct bloodline descendant using a registered family proxy."
Amelia stared at him, her jaw dropping. "That's impossible. My father died bankrupt. The estate was completely liquidated. There was nothing left."
"That's what the executors wanted everyone to believe," a new voice chimed in from the shadows of the corridor.

Both turned to see an elderly man stepping out from the recessed doorway. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that had seen better decades, and his silver hair was combed back neatly. He held a leather-bound briefcase in one hand and a gold-rimmed pair of glasses in the other. It was Marcus Vance, her father’s former legal counsel, a man Amelia hadn't seen since her teenage years—a man everyone in the family whispered had fled the country after the bankruptcy scandal.
"Hello, Amelia," Marcus said, his eyes carrying the heavy weight of decades of buried secrets. "It's time you learned the truth about why your father really had to disappear."
