Chapter 9: The Anatomy of a Mother’s Will

On December 14, Marcus Cole traveled to Charleston to retrieve Sarah Miller’s formal testamentary records from the probate court.

The discovery was a legal masterpiece.

Three weeks before she passed away, Sarah had consulted with a renowned pro-bono civil rights attorney in South Carolina. She had executed a comprehensive, videotaped testamentary deposition:

1. She formally detailed the physical, emotional, and financial abandonment by James and Eleanor Miller.
2. She executed a testamentary nomination of guardianship specifically naming **Claire Evelyn Vance** as the sole designated guardian of Sophie and Toby.
3. She established that James’s fraudulent divorce decree was executed without service of process, rendering it legally void ab initio.

When the video was played in the judge’s chambers before Judge Evelyn Harrison, the courtroom fell into stunned silence.

On the screen, Sarah looked directly into the camera, holding a photograph of Claire she had clipped from a newspaper article about the Vance Children's Foundation.

*""I have never met Claire Vance,""* Sarah said on the recording, her voice clear and transcendent. *""But I know she built sanctuaries for children who had no voice. James thinks he is hunting for an heiress; he doesn't know he is walking straight into the hands of a protector. Claire, I give you my children. Be their mother in the light.""*

Judge Harrison wiped a tear from her eye, closed the docket, and looked at James’s defense counsel.

""Counselor, your client’s petition for custody is denied with extreme prejudice,"" Judge Harrison ruled. ""And I am issuing an immediate bench warrant for James Miller for felony perjury and custodial interference.""
