Chapter 1: The Voice in the Aisle

The late afternoon sun slanted through the stained-glass windows of St. Jude’s Chapel in Savannah, casting warm ruby and sapphire patterns across the polished heart-pine pews. The air smelled of sweet gardenias, white lilies, and beeswax candles.

Claire Vance stood at the altar, her hand resting gently in the palm of James Miller.

Claire wore a custom Chantilly lace wedding gown with a delicate crystal belt and long sleeves. Her dark hair was gathered in a soft, low chignon adorned with seed pearls. Her hazel eyes were calm and radiant, reflecting the quiet joy of a woman ready to step into a lifelong commitment.

James looked every bit the distinguished Southern partner: tall, broad-shouldered, clad in a bespoke black tuxedo with a white rose pinned to his lapel. Beside him in the front pew sat his mother, Eleanor Miller, dressed in a formal taupe lace jacket and satin skirt, wearing a three-strand pearl necklace, her chin tilted at its usual haughty angle.

""Do you, Claire, take this man—"" the minister began.

A pair of small footsteps sounded from the back of the chapel, clicking rhythmically against the red carpet runner.

The heavy mahogany doors stood wide open to the oak-lined square outside. Walking side by side down the aisle were two young children.

The girl, about seven years old, had red-brown pigtails, a face dusted with freckles, and wore an off-the-rack cream satin flower-girl dress. Her small hands were clutched tightly around a drawstring satin pouch. Beside her walked a six-year-old boy in a clean, oversized white collared shirt, his wide hazel eyes looking directly toward the altar.

The chapel fell into a dead, suffocating hush.

The young girl stopped five feet from the chancel steps, looking up past the white floral arrangements directly into James’s face.

""Are you James Miller?"" Sophie asked, her voice clear, steady, and unhesitating.

James froze. The color drained from his face with sickening speed, his fingers turning ice-cold in Claire’s grip. His jaw dropped, eyes widening in sheer, breathless terror.

""Yes... you know us?"" James stammered, his voice cracking into a panicked register.

""Yes,"" Sophie replied. ""You know us.""

Eleanor Miller surged up from the front pew, her lace jacket rustling sharply as she stepped into the center aisle. Her mouth was twisted into a scowl of venomous indignation.

""Someone remove these children!"" Eleanor barked, glaring at the ushers near the back. ""This is an outrage! Security, get these urchins out of this chapel immediately!""

Sophie did not flinch. She took a step forward, raised her index finger, and pointed directly at Eleanor’s face.

""Mommy said not to trust his mother,"" Sophie declared, her voice ringing clearly off the chapel rafters.

Claire pulled her hands away from James as if his skin had caught fire. She turned to the man she had dated for two years, her voice trembling with rising horror and profound betrayal.

""You told me you’d never been married, James,"" Claire whispered, her chest heaving against her lace bodice.

James raised a pleading hand, sweating profusely beneath his collar. ""Claire, wait... this is a setup. I don't know who these children are—""

""She knows us,"" Sophie stated firmly, gesturing toward Eleanor.

The little boy, Toby, stepped forward beside Claire, looking up with solemn, innocent eyes as he held the cream satin pouch toward her.

""Mommy left another message,"" Toby whispered, his chin trembling slightly. ""She said only Claire can hear it.""
